Braxton Bertolette exploded for a career-high 33 points, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons lost a shootout on the road against West Georgia, 97-87. The Falcons fell to 8-12 and 6-6 with their fourth straight loss, while West Georgia improved to 7-9 and 4-5.
Bertolette knocked down 11-of-16 shots including eight 8-of-11 from 3-point range. James "JC" McNeil added 14 points, while Travarus "Bob" Carroll tallied 13 points and six assists and
Jason King added 11 points.
Michael Zabetakis led West Georgia with 22 points and eight rebounds. Kadiem Jones added 21 points and six rebounds, while Seth Brown-Carter contributed 18 points and Deng Nhial dropped in 16.
Both teams shot the lights out in the game, as UM shot 55.7% (34-of-61) for the game and UWG knocked down 59% (36-of-61). However, the difference was in the paint, as UWG outrebounded the Falcons 34-21. The Wolves bench also was key, outscoring the Falcons 27-18.
West Georgia led 43-37 at halftime after a tight first 20 minutes. The Wolves threatened to run away with the game as their lead ballooned to 17 points midway through the second half. A 3-pointer by Brown-Carter gave UWG their biggest lead of the game at 66-49 with 12:29 left.
The Falcons didn't fold the tents, battling back to close within three points late in the game. A 3-pointer by
Mason Shifflett with 1:48 remaining trimmed the deficit to 86-83. But, the Wolves outscored UM 11-4 the rest of the way to close out the victory.
The Falcons hope to stop the spiral on Wednesday night when they travel to Huntsville for a rematch against UAH. The Falcons beat the Chargers 75-65 in the first meeting a little over two weeks ago at Trustmark Arena.
