Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team snapped a three-game losing streak and notched its fourth straight conference win with a 3-1 victory of West Georgia, Friday.
In a night that featured just a .165 hit percentage for UM, the squad used a strong defensive effort to hold West Georgia to a .091 hit percentage and totaled 19-more attacks, helping the Falcons to large advantage in kills, 61-35.
Montevallo fell behind early on in the first set, trialing 7-3.
Macy Martin capped a 5-1 run for the Falcons to even the set, 11-11. With momentum on their side, UM took a 15-11 leading following a pair of attack errors and kills from
Jillian Morgan and
Morgan Hoffman. The Falcons held a lead the rest of the way and took the first set, 25-22, as
Allie Dishman finished it off with a kill.
Both sides traded points early on in the second set. After UM took a 10-8 lead, a 7-1 run for the Wolves put Montevallo behind 15-11. In a similar to position to UM in the first set, West Georgia held on to the four-point lead to take the second set, 25-22.
A 4-1 run early on in the third set gave Montevallo a 10-6 advantage. A 5-0 run that included three UWG errors pushed UM's lead to eight, 15-7. Despite allowing a 10-4 run for the Wolves, Montevallo held off the home-side, winning the third set, 25-19. After UWG cut the lead to two, 19-17, Montevallo responded with five-straight kills. Hoffman capped the run to put the Falcons up 23-17. Two kills from
Macy Martin finished off the third-set win.
In the fourth set Montevallo took an early 8-4 lead following a kill from
Aliyah Thompson. West Georgia responded with a 10-4 run to take the lead from UM, 14-12. A pair of errors ended the Wolves' momentum and kills from Morgan and Hoffman pushed Montevallo back in front, 16-14. Dishman capped a 5-2 run to give Montevallo a four-point lead, 20-16, forcing a West Georgia timeout. Out of the timeout,
Colton Thompson notched a service ace and
Aliyah Thompson added another kill. UWG ended the short scoring-spurt with a kill but back-to-back kills from Dishman gave Montevallo match-point, 24-17. An attack error by West Georgia concluded the set, 25-17, in favor of the Falcons and the match, 3-1.
With the win Montevallo improves to 16-9 overall on the year, marking the fourth-straight season with 16 wins or more, excluding the COVID-shortened spring 2021 season. The Falcons remain in third place in the GSC with a 9-2 overall mark.
