Montevallo Pulls Out Five-Set Win Over AUM

MONTEVALLO, Ala. -  The University of Montevallo volleyball team snapped a two-game losing skid, Tuesday, with a thrilling 3-2 win over AUM, at home.

After snapping a 10-game win streak against the Warhawks on Friday and falling to West Florida on Saturday, the Falcons return to the winning side and improve to 5-2 in GSC play with a win.  
 
AUM picked up there it left off from Friday's match, winning the opening set, 25-16. A dominant set-two performance from Montevallo evened the score, 25-15, before a 25-20 win in a back-and-forth third set put the Falcons on top, 2-1, in the match. AUM cruised to a 25-19 win in set-four, forcing a tiebreaking fifth set. Montevallo held off the Warhawks with an 15-11 win in the fifth.
 
Neither side hit well throughout the match but the Falcons held the advantage, .145 to .135. Montevallo hit the highest percentage of the match, .257, in the impressive second-set win.
 
Blocking was an early advantage for the Warhawks but they narrowly edged Montevallo 12-10 in the match. Jillian Morgan and Morgan Hoffman each led the blocking efforts with four block assists and one solo block each.
 
On the offensive end, Allie Dishman led the way with 15 kills and a pair of service aces. Morgan hit a team-high .261 in the match to go along with eight kills. Kamble Frenette managed six kills in the contest, including two important strikes late in the fifth set.

GAME NOTES
 
  • Montevallo edged AUM .145 to .135 in hit percentage.
  • Dishman registered a team-high 15 kills but Macy Martin added 12 to go along with 14 digs for a double-double.
  • Sav Roys tallied a team-high 25 assists and added 14 digs for a double-double while fellow setter Colton Thompson recorded 15 assists and 11 digs.
  • Megan Schram played a big role defensively and finished one shy of her season-high with 13 digs. Casey Hendrixson led Montevallo with 25 digs and averaged 5.0 per set.
  • The Falcons biggest advantage came from behind the service line as the visitors committed 10 service errors, including one to finish off the match. Montevallo had six aces and six errors in the win.
  • Montevallo remains undefeated at home (4-0) with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • An early 5-4 lead for the Falcons turned into 13-10 advantage for AUM following a 9-5 Warhawk run.
  • The Falcons were unable to catch up as AUM closed the set on a 7-1 run, winning 25-16.
Set 2
  • Montevallo flipped the script entirely in the second set and opened on a 6-0 run that was capped with an AUM attack-error.
  • The Falcons pushed the lead to seven, 17-10. Following another AUM attack-error that capped a 3-0 scoring spurt.
  • Martin pushed the lead to nine, 20-11, following a kill.
  • A kill from Aliyah Thompson, an AUM attack-error and a kill from Dishman capped off the set-win, 25-15.
 
Set 3
  • There was 10 ties and six lead changes in the third set and neither side was able to build more than a two-point lead until the later stages.
  • A 5-0 Falcon run broke an 18-18 tie and put the Falcons ahead 23-18.
  • Morgan and Martin finished off the set with kills as Montevallo took a 2-1 lead in the match following a 25-20 set-three win.
Set 4
  • AUM opened the set on top, 6-3.
  • A Warhawk ace pushed their lead to five, 17-12.
  • Montevallo was unable to take a lead down-the-stretch, falling 25-19.
Set 5
  • After AUM notched the opening tow points, a trio of Allie Dishman kills and a Frentte kill, gave way to a 4-0 Montevallo run, to lead 4-2.
  • Another kill from Frenette pushed the lead to five, 13-8, capping a 3-0 run.
  • Frenette added her third kill of the set, halting AUM's momentum, to give the Falcons match point, 14-10.
  • The 10th service-error of the match for AUM handed Montevallo a 15-11 win in the set and 3-2 win in the match.
 
 Up Next: The Falcons will return to Trustmark Arena on Friday, Oct. 7, to take on Union at 6 p.m.
