GAFFNEY, S.C. - Behind a hard fought effort against a tough Limestone University Saints, the Montevallo women's lacrosse team slipped 14-8 Sunday afternoon in South Carolina. With the loss the Falcons go 1-2 overall this season with the Saints advancing to 2-0.
The Falcons were led by sophomore attacker
Lily McCormick, who netted three goals on four shots. Montevallo also recieved scoring contributions from
Anja Kuys (2),
Jenna Piazza (1),
Hailey Wilcox (1), and
Rylee Horton (1). The UM defense was bolstered by
Rachel Rose who picked up five ground balls, and
Eleanor Bruce with four draw controls.
Montevallo was first on the board at 13:05 with
Anja Kuys finding the back of the net before Limestone set off a 4-0 run before the next UM goal.
Lily McCormick notched a key goal in the second quarter to give the Falcons new life with 8:14 left in the half. The Saints rang off two more goals following UM's third, but the Falcons answered as
Lily McCormick hit her second consecutive goal with 1:05 left in the second quarter.
Anja Kuys ignited the Falcons with the first goal of the second half to cut the Saint's lead 6-4 in the first 00:50 of the second half. Limestone went on to hit their next six goals unanswered as the fourth quarter time ticked down from 8:23.
Hailey Wilcox netted the Falcons fifth goal off a pass from
Eleanor Bruce, with 7:45 left in the game. Montevallo outscored Limestone 3-2 for the remainder of the final period but the Saints held off the Falcons for the six point victory.
UP NEXT: The Falcons will return to the state of South Carolina to face North Greenville University, with the first draw set for Friday, February 25th at 5:00 PM EST.
