MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Montevallo baseball team opened the season with a 6-2 win on the road at Auburn-Montgomery.
Outfielder
Asa Awbrey went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double to lead the way for UM. Sophomore transfer
Gino Cozzi got the win for the Falcons, while
Danny Glenos earned the save. Cozzi pitched five and two thirds innings, gave up four hits and two earned runs. He struck out three and walked two. Glenos pitched the final two thirds innings, striking out one and walking a batter.
The Falcons fell behind after giving up a pair of runs in the first inning. However, UM answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Awbrey got things started in the inning, with a lead-off double. He scored on a base hit by first baseman
Ben Teel, plating the first run of the season and cutting the deficit to 2-1. One batter later, Teel tied the game when he scored on an RBI single by catcher
Jake Smallwood. Smallwood would score the go-ahead run on an RBI double by
Reed Latimer.
The Falcons added three more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-2. One of the runs came on a fielder's choice that scored
Brandon Moore from third base.
The Warhawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th, but came up empty.
The Falcons and Warhawks will play a doubleheader at Kermit A. Johnson at Bob Reisner Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
