Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Montevallo women's basketball team had their season come to an end with a 69-53 loss on the road against top seed and third-ranked Union University in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference tournament. The Falcons finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 13-16, while Union (24-2) advanced to the semifinals in Birmingham at Samford University.
Senior guard
Kiya Sain had 15 points and six rebounds to lead UM in her final game as a Falcon. She ends her career amassing over 1,200 points. Junior forward
McCarley Northway was the only other Falcon player in double-figures, scoring 11 points.Â
Jaelencia Williams led Union with 21 points and 15 rebounds, while Emily Beard contributed 12 points.Â
The Falcons struggled on offense all evening, shooting 28% from the field. In the first quarter, UM made only 3-of-18 shots (16.7%), but were still in the game, trailing 17-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Falcons stayed within a point in the second quarter, remaining within striking distance at 30-22 at halftime. But, Union began to pull away in the third quarter stretching their lead out to 15 points at 47-32 with 2:38 left. Heading into the final period, the Falcons trailed 51-38.
The tank ran out in the fourth quarter as the deficit would grow to as much as 23 points. The Falcon tried to rally down the stretch, but it would be too little too late.
