Falcons strike early and roll past Miles College 10-2

MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The Montevallo baseball team scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 10-2 win over Miles College in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Riesener Stadium. With the win, the 26th-ranked Falcons improved to 28-10, while Miles fell to 19-15. 

Next Up: The Falcons travel to Clinton, Mississippi on Easter weekend for a Gulf South Conference series against Mississippi College. The two teams will play a single game on Friday at 5 p.m., then a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon 

Pitching
Jake O'Connell earned his first win of the season. He was the starter in a game where the Falcons used nine pitchers. He worked the first 1 2/3 innings, didn't allow a hit, but a run scored. He had a pair of strikeouts and walked one batter.

Falcons Leaders
Ben Teel was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Reed Latimer was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Sam Kuchinski was 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. 

Key Plays:

Bottom 1st
The Falcons piled up six runs. Ben Teel started the scoring with a 3-run homer. Sam Kuchinski added another run, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Riley Cain. Reed Latimer made it 5-0 when he scored on a walk by Brandon Moore with the bases loaded. Then, Jake Smallwood was hit by a pitch with the bases full, scoring Will Pratt from third base.

Bottom 2nd
An error led to a run by Miles, the Falcons loaded the bases again, but came up empty.

Bottom 3rd
Latimer drove home a run with a single up the middle, making the score 7-1. 

Bottom 4th
Chad Moore added another run, scoring on the back end of a double-play to increase the UM lead to 8-1.

Bottom 7th
The Golden Bears picked up a run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning. Reed Latimer answered with an RBI single to give UM a 9-2 lead.

Bottom 8th
Mitch Fleming capped the scoring for the Falcons with an RBI single.
