Trip to Mississippi proves fruitless for the Falcons softball team

RAYMOND, Miss. --- Perhaps it was a bad omen that began with a  power outage at Rene Wallace Field on Friday, but things didn't go well for the Montevallo softball team. The Falcons were trying to rebound from a series opening walk-off loss to Mississippi College on Friday, but things didn't work out as planned. For the third time this season, the Falcons were swept after losing on Friday 8-4 and 6-5. The Falcons fell to 22-17 overall and 12-10 in the Gulf South Conference after coming up empty on the road trip, while Mississippi College improved to 20-17 and 12-12 in the GSC.

Next Up: The Falcons return home to face Lee University in another Gulf South Conference series at Orr Park. The teams will play a single game on Friday, April 22nd at 2 p.m. then finish the weekend on Saturday, April 23rd with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

GAME 1

Pitching
Kaylee Hawkins (6-6) was the losing pitcher for the Falcons. She surrendered six earned runs on 11 hits. She had a strikeout, but walked six.

Falcons Leaders
Hannah Carey and Alisha Lanyon each had two hits. Sydnee Pawlak also drove in two runs on one hit.

Key Plays:

2nd Inning
After Mississippi College scored first in the first inning, the Falcons evened the score in the second inning Kinley Adams reached on an error, and Alisha Lanyon scored to make it 1-1.

3rd Inning
The Choctaws scored twice, increasing their lead to 3-1.

4th Inning
The Falcons battled back to reclaim the lead with three runs. Sydnee Pawlak drove in two of the runs with a 2-run single. Then, Lauren Higginbotham drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single. However, the Falcons would stall on offense the rest of the game. Mississippi College seesawed back in the front in the bottom of the inning and would never trail again.

The Choctaws scored one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead. Their was no answer from UM who went to suffer their third straight loss.

GAME 2
It appeared early that the Falcons were going to avoid the sweep with some offensive production in their first at bat. But, MC ended that dream, plating four runs to take over the lead and going on to edge the Falcons 6-5.

Pitching
Kaitlyn Flugga (0-2) took the loss for the Falcons. She worked 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Mychael McMillan who was knocked out of the game after pitching into the third inning. She allowed four hits and a run, while striking out three.

Falcons Leaders
Taylor Robinson and Lauren Higginbotham both had two hits. Robinson had an RBI. Lauren Hamby had two RBIs.

Key Plays:

1st Inning
Lauren Hamby drove home the first run, then another run came with a different light. Hannah Carrie drove home on an RBI single, making it 2-0. Alisha Lanyon later scored on a ground out.

3rd Inning
The Choctaws bounced back with four runs in the third to jump back in front 4-3.

4th Inning
Pawlak scored on a passed ball, tying the game at 4-all. Then, the Falcons retook the lead on Lauren Hamby's RBI single.

5th and 6th inning
The Choctaws tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, then took the lead back in the sixth and never trailed again.
