Montevallo Sweeps Trevecca Nazarene, Falls to No. 2 Washburn 3-1 at Lee Invitational

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team split matches on day one of the Lee University Invitational Friday, defeating Trevecca Nazarene 3-0 and falling to No. 2 Washburn 3-1.
 
The Falcons opened the day with their second sweep of the season over Trevecca Nazarene. Montevallo played tight in the first set, 29-27, before breaking away in the second and third sets with 25-13 and 25-10 set-wins, respectively.
 
In the afternoon slate, Montevallo matched up with the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, Washburn. Montevallo fell behind in both the first and second sets but showed resurgence in the third set with a 25-18 victory. Montevallo's third-set win was only Washburn's second set lost on the year. UM pushed Washburn to the brink in the fourth set but fell short, 25-21.
 
On the day, Macy Martin led the Falcons with 25 kills while Casey Hendrixson compiled 39 digs for 5.5 digs per set.

  • Allie Dishman led the Falcons in kills for the fourth straight match with 11 while hitting .476
  • Macy Martin added nine kills and four digs.
  • Kamble Frenette and Aliyah Thompson each tallied seven kills while hitting .222 and .267, respectively.
  • Morgan Hoffman added five kills while hitting at a .714 clip.
  • Sav Roys led the way with 22 assists and a team-high 13 digs while Colton Thompson registered 15 assists and six digs.
  • Montevallo recorded 10 service aces in the match as Frenette led with way with a career-high five. Allie Dishman added four and Macy Martin recorded one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • Montevallo opened the match with a lead over the Trojans, 9-5, after a pair of 3-0 scoring runs.
  • Trevecca Nazarene took a 20-17 advantage with a 7-2 run before back-to-back kills from Frenette evened the set, 20-20.
  • A Dishman kills gave UM a 24-22 edge but a 4-2 Trojan run put the Falcons behind, 26-25.
  • Another kill from Frenette put Montevallo on top, 28-27, before a service ace from Martin clinched the first set win, 29-27.
Set 2
  • After a back-and-forth start to the second set, UM broke away mid-way through with 9-0 run to take a 17-11 lead. Dishman and Martin each recorded a pair of kills in the run while Frenette added two service aces.
  • Montveallo outscored the Trojans 8-2 the rest of the way, winning 25-13 in the second set.
Set 3
  • The Falcons opened with a 5-1 advantage over Trevecca Nazarene in the third set when Frenette added another ace.
  • A 6-0 run, that included four Trojan errors, put the Falcons on top, 18-8.
  • Montevallo continued to show its dominance in the third set, finishing on a 7-2 run to win the set, 25-10, and the match, 3-0.

Set 1
  • Washburn opened the match on a 9-1 run to lead the Falcons.
  • Washburn extended the lead to 11, 17-7, and led the rest of the way, winning the first set, 25-15.
Set 2
  • Montevallo gained an early lead over Washburn, 5-4, following a kill from Kamble Frenette to start the second set.
  • Dishman extended the Falcons' lead to three, 11-8, with a kill.
  • The Ichabods used an 8-2 run to take a 15-13 lead.
  • Another 8-2 run gave Washburn a 23-15 advantage before a trio of kills from Montevallo cut the deficit to six, 24-18.
  • The Montevallo comeback was halted as Washburn took the second set, 25-18.
Set 3
  • The Falcons did not go away quietly in the third set, opening on a 7-2 run.
  • A service ace from Frenette extended the lead to sic, 14-8.
  • Frenette and Dishman pushed the lead to seven, 22-15, as the Falcons continued to control the third set.
  • A 4-1 run for Washburn cut Montevallo's lead to five before Dishman secured the set-win with a kill and a service ace.
Set 4
  • Montevallo and Washburn traded points early on in the fourth set until a 6-1 run put the Ichabods up 15-9.
  • The Falcons responded with nine unanswered points, including five kills, to surge ahead, 18-15.
  • A 5-0 run from Washburn put the Falcons behind 20-18.
  • Montevallo fought off a match point with a block from Aliyah Thompson and Morgan Hoffman before Washburn secured the win, 25-21 and 3-1 in the match.
