Comeback Bid Falls Short to VSU 110-103

MONTEVALLO, Ala.  – The University of Montevallo's comeback bid fell short against Valdosta State, 110-103, Monday in Trustmark Arena.
 
The Falcons crossed the century mark for the second consecutive game but were unable to finish in the win column as the Blazers shot 46.4 percent from three-point range.
 
After falling behind by 20 points, 107-87 with 2:29 to go, Jaylon Tharpe sparked a 14-0 run with a three-pointer. With 18 seconds to go, Aidan Gardiner cut the deficit to six, 107-101, to cap the run. Valdosta State closed out the game from the free-throw line, holding off the Falcons' comeback-bid, 110-103.  Montevallo trailed by as many as 23 in the game but outscored the visitors 16-3 over the final 2:12.
 
Braxton Bertolette led the Falcons in scoring with 26 points for the second straight game while Mason Shifflett recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards.

GAME NOTES
 
  • Valdosta State outshot the Falcons narrowly, 48.1 to 46.1 percent from the field but held an advantage from three, 46.4 to 31.0 percent.
  • Each team committed 24 turnovers but the Blazers outscored UM 29-22 in points-from-turnovers.
  • VSU outrebounded UM 47-42 and 16-13 on the offensive glass.
  • Braxton Bertolette scored a team-high 26 points while Mason Shifflett scored a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards.
  • Freshman Tyler Moore added a team-high seven assists while James McNeil led UM with four steals to go along with 14 points.
  • Montevallo trailed by as many as 23 in the contest and outscored VSU 16-3 over the final 2:12 of play.
  • Both teams combined for 72 fast-break points in a fast-paced contest.
