Free Throw Shooting Lifts Montevallo Over Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The Montevallo women's basketball team held off Mississippi College's comeback effort in a 64-58 victory over the Lady Choctaws.

Both teams opened the game with hot shooting as with the Falcons shooting 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from the floor while MC knocked down 53.8 percent (7-of-13) of shots in the first ten minutes. Montevallo held an advantage in threes and free throws in the first quarter to take a 24-15 lead into the second. Marisa Snodgrass was on fire from the jump with eight first-quarter points to lead all scorers.

Montevallo continued its strong start with 18 second-quarter points, led by Anna Katherine Eastman's eight points on 3-of-4 shooting. The Falcons stretched the lead to 17, the largest of the game, after freshman Katie Moore laid one in on a fast break at the 2:27 mark. A 7-0 run from the Lady Choctaws in the final 1:44 sliced Montevallo's lead to nine, 42-33, at the half.

Shyan Flack stretched the Falcons advantage back to 14 points with a layup with 4:56 to go in the third before MC battled back to cut the lead down to just three, 51-48, heading into the final quarter of play.

Mississippi College trimmed the lead to one after a layup early in the fourth but four quick points from Snodgrass and McCarley Northway gave Montevallo a bit of breathing room. The final 4:16 came up all Montevallo as the Falcons held MC to just four points down the stretch. A pair of made free throws from Snodgrass with just 2.7 seconds left lifted the team to a six-point victory.

Snodgrass was the top performer for Montevallo with 20 points on a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe to go along with four steals, three assists, and two rebounds. Michaella Edwards came up one rebound short of a double-double with ten points and nine boards in 30:04 of action.
