Weekend Preview: Women's Soccer

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer is set to host two Gulf South Conference games this week with No. 21 West Florida coming to town on Friday, Oct. 6 and Spring Hill visiting Varsity Field on Sunday, Oct. 8.

So Far This Season…
The Falcons enter the week looking to rebound from a pair of losses on the road at West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville. Montevallo holds a 2-2-2 league mark with an overall record of 5-3-2 through the season's first ten games. Currently, the Falcons sit at eighth in the league table with a total of eight points. Montevallo still boasts one of the conference's top defenses allowing just six goals with a league-high six shutouts.

Scouting West Florida: WATCH | LIVE STATS
The Argonauts come into Montevallo as the No. 21 team in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll after posting a 7-1-1 record through nine games. West Florida was unbeaten in its first eight games with three wins over Sunshine State Conference members Eckerd, Florida Southern, and Lynn. In league competition, the Argos posted a 4-0 start with wins over Mississippi College, Delta State, Spring Hill and Shorter before falling to Lee, 2-1, on Sunday, Oct. 1. UWF boasts a balanced attack with ten players adding a goal. The Argos attack is led by Mya Swinton who has scored a conference-leading seven goals and four assists for a GSC-high 18 points.

Scouting Spring Hill: WATCH | LIVE STATS
The Badgers head to central Alabama with a 5-5 overall record and a 2-3 mark in conference play. In the non-conference schedule, the Badgers posted a 3-2 record with wins over Xavier (La.), Talladega and Point. Spring Hill opened league competition with a 2-1 win over Delta State before sliding into a three-game losing streak against Mississippi College, West Florida and Lee. SHC rebounded with a shutout win against Shorter on Oct. 1. The Badgers have seen 12 players score so far in 2023 with seven goals from junior Poppy Binding leading the squad.

Series History Against West Florida:
Montevallo, much like much of the GSC, has struggled historically against the Argos. In 23 meetings, the Falcons have a 3-18-2 record against UWF with the Argos taking each of the last two matchups. The Falcons most recent outright win against UWF came back in 2007 when UM defeated the Argos twice in the same season. Since then, Montevallo has managed to tie with the Argos just once in the 2019 GSC Semifinals with the Falcons moving on with a 4-3 score in penalty kicks.

Series History Against Spring Hill:
Montevallo has dominated the series with Spring Hill with the lone blemish on the Falcons 8-0-1 record against the Badgers being a 0-0 tie in 2015. The two sides met three times before SHC became a member of GSC soccer in 2015 with Montevallo allowing just one goal in three wins from 2004-07. The Falcons have won every match but one against the Badgers since 2015 with Montevallo taking the most recent matchup, 2-1, on Sept. 30, 2022.

Player Highlights:
The Falcons attack is headlined by veterans Alea Taube and Kaeri Ward who have each scored three goals this season. Montevallo's Lainey Farabaugh and Kieran Burkey are the Falcons other multiple goal scorers with each finding two goals. The Falcons also saw nine other players adding to the team's goal total. Senior goalkeeper Emily Hounsell remains one of the top keepers in the league with just five goals allowed in seven outings. Hounsell's four shutouts are tied for the most by any GSC keeper.
