Second Half Comeback Falls Short to Barry U, 95-83

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The University of Montevallo men's basketball team dropped game two of the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Crossover Tournament, on Saturday, Nov. 11, against Barry U, 95-83.
 
After taking a lead on the first bucket, Barry's offense erupted to lead UM 15-5 early on. The Bucs continued to hit shots as the Falcons trailed 59-35 at halftime as the home side shot 74 percent from the floor.
 
Despite falling behind in the first half, the Falcons outscored the hosts 48-36 in the second, however, the comeback fell short.
 
 
Foul trouble plagued UM late in the contest as three players fouled out.
 
In the second half, UM trimmed the deficit to as little as 11, but Barry found ways to answer and would go on to win, 95-83.
 
For the second straight game, at least three Falcons scored in double-figures. Graduate transfer Jack Henderson led the way with a season-high 16 to go along with five boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st        | Montevallo struck first with a Cam Glover layup but trailed 15-5 at the first media timeout following a 15-3 run by the Bucs. The home side's hot start continued for the rest of the first half as the Bucs shot 74 percent from the field and 75 percent from the three-point range. Barry's hot shooting gave the Bucs a 59-35 lead at the break. Glover scored a team-high eight points in the first half for UM.

2nd       | A 12-5 run, capped with a Charlie Champagne three, midway through the second half, made it a 13-point game, 66-53. Barry continued to click on offense and extended its lead to as many as 19 with 11:04 to play. A three-pointer from Jack Henderson capped a 10-4 run to make it a nine-point game, 84-75 with 5:29 to go. A quick 6-0 run by the Bucs made it a 15-point game. UM kept battling but was unable to stop the Bucs down the stretch.
 
GAME NOTES
 
  • Barry shot a staggering 74 percent from the field and 75 percent from three in the first half.
  • Montevallo found success on offense in the second half, outscoring Barry 48-36.
  • UM shot just 36 percent from the field and 30 percent from three overall while Barry was 57 percent and 63 percent, respectively.
  • Foul trouble plagued UM as three Falcons fouled out and Barry attempted 40 free-throws with 25 makes.
  • Despite a poor rebounding margin in the first half, UM finished just eight shy of the Bucs and won the battle on the offensive boards, 15-10.
  • Montevallo generated 16 second-chance buckets while Barry managed just five.
  • Defensively, Montevallo forced 29 turnovers and committed just 18.
  • 27 of UM's 83 points came from turnovers.
  • Jack Henderson led UM with a season-high 16 points while three Falcons chipped in double-figures.
  • Montevallo recorded 22 assists on 29 made shots in the game, including a team-high eight assists from Tevin Gowins.
  • Freshman Landon Butler led UM with seven boards and added a team-high six steals.
