MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's basketball moved to 2-1 in the non-conference slate with a 27-point victory over Birmingham-Southern during Montevallo's Education Day.
The Falcons soared out to an early lead with a 9-0 run in the game's first four minutes following an opening bucket from Birmingham-Southern. Montevallo's early run saw five points from sophomore guard
Isabel Grimes, capped by a three from the Harned, Kentucky native. Montevallo gave up the final BSC points with 5:20 remaining in the first before rattling off a 14-0 to end the quarter. The Falcons' dominant run featured the game's first points from GSC Freshman of the Week
Cali Smallwood to lead the Falcons to a 23-6 lead before the break.
Montevallo's offense cooled off in the second quarter, going scoreless for the first 4:29 of the second. A
Savannah Cook three-pointer with 4:22 remaining ended a 7-1 run from the Panthers to start the quarter. The Falcons continued its shooting woes in the second quarter until a layup from Grimes lifted the Falcons to a 29-16 lead with 2 minutes left in the half. A runner from A.K. Eastman with 38 second remaining proved to be the final points of the half with Montevallo leading 33-19 at the break.
Following a bucket from BSC at the 8:27 mark in the third, the Falcons went on a 14-0 run to take a 49-22 advantage with 3:35 remaining in the quarter. BSC ended the run with back-to-back threes but a
Savannah Cook jumper left the Falcons with a 51-28 lead heading into the fourth. Cook led all scorers in the quarter with six points on 50-percent from the floor while
Ramie Reid and
Leisha Steger grabbed four boards.
The first four minutes of the fourth quarter saw all the scoring from both sides come from the charity stripe. A Reid put-back at the 5:21 mark opened a 25-point Montevallo lead before Cook extended the lead with a pair of free throws at the 5:11 mark. Montevallo closed the game on a 6-1 run to claim its second victory of the season.
