MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer advanced to the 2023 Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament after defeating fifth-seeded Union 1-0 on Saturday night.
The Falcons attack got out of the gate quickly with two Montevallo corners coming inside the first three minutes before Falcon keeper
Emily Hounsell was forced to make her first save of the night.
Montevallo's
Angelina Rivas fired the game's first shot on goal for UM at the 10:43 mark with Hounsell coming up with their second save of the night in the 19
th minute. The Falcons' frontline continued it onslaught of first-half shots with
Tina Palmieri taking a shot on goal before Rivas fired another shot around the 23-minute mark.
A pair of
Madeline Milby shots were the prelude to
Isabel Dillehay's second goal of the season to lift Montevallo to a 1-0 advantage with six minutes to go in the half.
Montevallo looked to add a second first-half goal with consecutive shots from
Tessa Harrington and two from
Lainey Farabaugh in the closing stages.
Rivas fired a dangerous shot just six minutes into the second half but was turned aside by Union's keeper. Just four minutes later,
Kaeri Ward fired her first shot on goal of the evening but again couldn't beat the keeper.
The Falcons advanced to the semifinals of the GSC tournament after locking down Union for the entire second half, allowing just four shots and no shots on goal in the final 45 minutes.
