MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's basketball is set to host West Georgia on Friday, Dec. 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the lone Falcon contest over the weekend.
The Falcons enter Friday night's contest with the third-best conference record at 5-1 behind two undefeated GSC squads with the second-best overall mark in the league with a 7-2 mark. Montevallo is off to its best start through nine games since the 2019-20 season when the Falcons were 8-1 heading into the Christmas break.
So Far This Season…
Montevallo enters the contest with a 7-2 overall record and a 5-1 mark in league play, the best start since the 2019-20 season. The Falcons began the season with a 2-1 record in the non-conference schedule before opening the league slate with a pair of road wins over Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama. Head Coach
Olivia Chapman's squad moved to 3-0 in league play with a 66-57 win over Shorter before falling to Lee on Dec. 3. In its most recent road trip, Montevallo defeated Mississippi College 70-60 before knocking off Delta State 55-53 on Dec. 10.
The Falcons boast a top-four offense in the GSC with a 70.3 point per game average while allowing just 63.3 points per game (fifth). Montevallo is also one of the league's top free throw shooting team with a 76.3 percent shooting clip while defending at a high level, allowing opponents to shoot just 39 percent from the field.

The Wolves enter the matchup with a 4-4 overall record and a 1-4 mark in conference action. West Georgia opened the season with back-to-back wins over Albany State and Tuskegee in the GSC/SIAC Crossover. The Wolves then took down Talladega, 78-50, on Nov. 18 before opening the GSC schedule with a four-point win over Auburn Montgomery on Nov. 25. With a loss to Christian Brothers on Nov. 30, West Georgia began a four-game skid. The Wolves fell to Union, 96-86, on Dec. 3 before falling to Valdosta State at home on Dec. 7. In its most recent outing, West Georgia dropped a game to West Florida, 69-67, on Dec. 10.
West Georgia is one of the top scoring teams in the conference with a 72 point per game average (third) while allowing 66 points per game to opponents (66.0). The Wolves struggle on the three-point line shooting just 27.3 percent during the first month of the season.
West Georgia's coring is highlighted by junior guard Zuriyah Davis who averages 16.5 points per game on 36.3 percent shooting while Jada Powell leads the Wolves on the glass with 9.5 rebounds per game. Powell nearly averages a double-double with 9.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
Series History Against West Georgia:
West Georgia holds a six-game advantage over the Falcons with a 27-21 record since the series began in 1979. Since the Falcons rejoined the GSC, Montevallo is 6-3 against the Wolves with UWG taking the first matchup during the 2017-18 season. The Falcons bounced back with consecutive wins in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. Following a loss to UWG, Montevallo rattled off three wins in a row from 2020-21 to 2021-22. With West Georgia taking back-to-back wins over the Falcons, Montevallo won the most recent matchup, 57-50, on Jan. 14, 2023.
