Falcons' Comeback Effort Halted at Valdosta State

Snodgrass and Northway combine for 39 points on 15-of-23 from the field.

VALDOSTA, Ga. – University of Montevallo women's basketball dropped a road contest at Valdosta State, 71-59, Thursday night. 
 
Montevallo's offense got out to a good start with a back and forth first eight minutes until a 7-0 run from the Lady Blazers stretched the lead to 17-10. Senior Marisa Snodgrass knocked down her second three of the quarter with :14 seconds left to rime the lead to four heading into the second. Snodgrass led all scorers with nine points in the opening quarter. 
 
Valdosta State took control of the first half with a 14-4 run the first seven minutes of the second quarter. The Falcons struggled to find form on the offensive end with four turnovers while allowing the Lady Blazers to shoot 57.1 percent from the field. With an added eight points from Snodgrass, Montevallo trailed, 40-27, heading into the half. 
 
The Falcons came out of the locker room in an offensive groove that lead to a 60 percent shooting mark in the quarter. Snodgrass kept Montevallo within striking distance with a pair of quick threes to open the third quarter, trailing 45-33. McCarley Northway's single-woman five-point run cut the lead to single digits at 47-39. In the next Falcon possession, Northway connected with Shyan Flack to make it a six-point game. VSU converted its chances at the foul line down the stretch to take an 11-point advantage into the fourth.
 
Both teams traded buckets in the first three minutes of the fourth until Isabel Grimes knocked down a three to trim the Lady Blazers lead to 58-50. A quick 8-2 run left the Falcons trailing by 14 with 4:33 remaining. Montevallo couldn't overcome the deficit in the final minutes, giving Valdosta State the victory, 71-59. 
 
Snodgrass had game-highs in points (25), field goals (nine), and three-point field goals (four). Northway added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with seven boards. Flack also posted seven rebounds as the third Falcon with double-figure scoring at 10 points (4-of-11).

HOW IT HAPPENED 
1st | Montevallo matched buckets with Valdosta State until a quick 7-0 run gave VSU a 17-13 lead. Snodgrass led all scorers with nine points in the quarter.
2nd | The Falcons' turnovers lead to extra possessions for VSU, giving the Lady Blazers a 40-27 advantage heading into the half. 
3rd | UM mounted its comeback effort early in the second half with a 7-0 run midway through the third that cut the lead to six. VSU's harp shooting from the stripe left Montevallo trailing by 11 heading into the final stanza.  
4th | Valdosta State kept Montevallo at arm's length during the fourth to take the game, 71-59. 
 
GAME NOTES
  • Snodgrass and Northway combined for 39 points on 15-of-23 from the field with a 5-for-10 mark from three. 
  • Northway and Flack led the way on the glass for Montevallo with seven boards each. 
  • The Falcons lost the battle on the boards, 36-29. 
  • Montevallo turned the ball over 18 times which led to 23 for Valdosta State. 
  • Both sides looked to work the ball inside with 30 points from Montevallo in the paint and 34 paint points for VSU.
