WISE, Va. - The University of Montevallo women's lacrosse team won in the final seconds of an exciting game at the RV University of Virginia's College at Wise.
The first goal of the game went to UVA Wise. The Falcon's came back with their first goal from
Claire Withington on an assist from
Lily McCormick at the 6:04 mark in the first period. This goal tied the game 1-1, until a second goal by the Cavaliers put them ahead to enter the second quarter.
In the second period, Montevallo held UVA Wise scoreless. With a goal from
Mikaela Barbieri, assisted by
Jodi Morawiec, the Falcons tied the game 2-2 with 7:54 to go until halftime.
Crystal Williams added an unassisted goal to put the Falcons up 3-2 before heading to the locker room.
After the break, the Falcons started hot, with a goal from
Anja Kuys, assisted by
Lily McCormick with 14:25 on the clock, putting the team up 4-2. UVA Wise split goals with the Falcons as they scored between Kuys and an unassisted goal from Morawiec. The Cavaliers then added their second goal of the half making the score 5-4. The Falcons answered back with another two goals, one from Barbieri with an assist from
Carsyn Tinney and one from
Jenna Piazza to stretch their lead to three, 7-4.
The Falcons' three-goal lead didn't last long as the Cavaliers battled back, scoring three goals before the Falcon's first of the fourth period, tying up the game 7-7. A free position goal by Williams, at the 4:52, mark put Montevallo back on top. This lead was quickly brought back to a with the next possession for UVA Wise leading to a goal with 4:27 left in the game. Even with two yellow cards within the final minutes of the game, Montevallo's defense pulled through. After two saves from
Rachel Rose and a ground ball from
Linnea Ayers, the Falcons were able to call a timeout with 1:08 to go. This setup the game-winning goal for Kuys with an assist from Withington with only 0:17 left. The final score was 9-8.
