VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Montevallo women's basketball team's season ended Tuesday night with a 71-66 overtime loss to Valdosta State in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference tournament.
Montevallo fell behind 4-0 in the opening two minutes but a pair of threes from
Marisa Snodgrass and
Michaella Edwards gave the Falcons its first lead of the night at the 6:07 mark.
McCarley Northway closed the first quarter with a one-woman five-point run to give Montevallo a 13-12 lead after one.
Edwards and freshman Savanah Cook combined for 16 of Montevallo's 21 points in the second quarter. Edwards opened the quarter with two three-pointers to extend Montevallo's lead to 22-16. Cook got on the board for the first time in the game with five-straight points to regain the lead after Valdosta took it back with 4:14 to go. The freshman forward finished the quarter with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting with a 2-for-3 mark from deep to give Montevallo a five-point advantage, 34-29, heading into the break.
Valdosta State started the second half on an 11-6 run to knot the score at 40 all with 5:29 remaining. A quick duo of buckets from VSU left Montevallo in a 45-40 hole but the Falcons upperclassmen finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to regain control, 46-45.
The fourth quarter was back and forth down to the wire. After VSU took the lead, Northway answered with a bucket of her own to tilt the score to Montevallo, 48-47. Following an Edwards three, Valdosta State answered with a jumper to tie the game at 51. With the Falcons trailing by two with 1:15 to go, Edwards knocked down a clutch three to take a one-point advantage, 59-58. After a pair of missed free throws from UM, VSU had a chance to win the game in regulation with a trip to the line but failed to convert both, sending the game into overtime at 59-59.
The first three points of overtime came from the charity stripe with Northway trimming the Lady Blazers lead to just one, 61-60, with 3:45 to go. Valdosta State opened up a four-point lead until
Shyan Flack nailed one to make the score 64-62. The Falcons couldn't keep up with VSU's late game scoring as VSU took an eight-point lead with 29 seconds left. Free throws from the Lady Blazers made the final score 71-66.
A quartet of Falcons reached double-figure scoring, Edwards, Northway, Flack and Cook. Edwards and Northway each scored 15 points while Northway added 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Flack nearly reached a double-double with 12 points and eight boards. Cook's ten second-quarter points turned out to be her total for the night.
The Falcons season ends with a 12-17 overall record and a 12-12 mark in conference play.
