HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Montevallo baseball team closed out the 2023 Houston Winter Invitational with a dominant 15-0 win over Arkansas Tech to cap off an opening-weekend sweep.
Montevallo jumped ahead of the Wonder Boys early when
Matt Simon doubled down the left-field line to bring home
Luke Mitchell and
Asa Awbrey.
In the top of the third the Falcons broke the game wide open with a five spot in the half inning. An RBI single from Awbrey opened the scoring in the frame, followed by an RBI single for Mitchell. The scoring continued when Mitchell stole home and
Barry Eiseman cleared the bases with a three-RBI double.
The bats stayed hot in the fourth inning as Mitchell drove in Awbrey on a double to left. The Falcons plated two more on an RBI from
Will LaFollette and
Will Pratt before
Ben Teel cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field.
Following the Falcons' output in the third
Dylan Freeman held the Wonder Boys scoreless for the fourth consecutive inning and finished the day with three strikeouts, just two hits and no runs allowed.
Montevallo's bullpen shined over the final three innings and helped hold the shutout.
Danny Glenos earned the win and struck out two in the fifth.
Chris Foster pitched the sixth and struck out the side. In the seventh,
Brooks Cooner closed out the 15-0 win with a strikeout.
Montevallo swept the weekend to finish as one of just two teams to go 3-0 in the 2023 Houston Winter Invitational with the other being the defending National Champions, North Greenville.

MONTEVALLO HIGHLIGHTS
- Ben Teel and Asa Awbrey each finished 3-for-4 from the plate on the evening. Teel drove in three runs on a home run and finished just a triple shy of the cycle.
- Freshman Luke Mitchell was 2-for-2 from the plate, scored three runs and drove in two.
- Barry Eiseman led the team with four RBI in the win, including a three-RBI double. He finished 2-for-3 from the plate.
- Dylan Freeman earned the start and pitched four innings with three strikeouts and no runs allowed.
- Danny Glenos earned the win out of the bullpen and struck out two with no runs allowed.
- Chris Foster struck out the side in his one-inning pitched.
- As a staff, the Falcons allowed just three hits, struck out nine batters and allowed no runs.
- Montevallo and defending national champions, North Greenville, were the only teams to go 3-0 in the 2023 Houston Winter Invitational.
