Falcons Win in Walk-Off Fashion Against Shorter

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo softball team swept the series with Shorter after a walk-off 7-6 win on Sunday, Mar. 12.

Shorter broke the ice with one run on three hits in the top of the first before Taylor Robinson tied the game at one with her ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the inning.

The game turned into a defensive battle in the next inning and a half with just three hits from both sides heading into the bottom of the third. Robinson got the Falcons' offense started in the inning with a two-out double before Alisha Lanyon drove her home with an RBI double. Sophomore Ellie Derrick gave Montevallo a 4-1 lead with a two-run shot, her fifth of the year.

Shorter answered in the next at-bat with a grand slam to regain control at 5-4.

Lily Stone started the fourth with a leadoff single and scored the tying run of the game just a few batters later with an RBI from Bentlee Stiner

The Hawks took the lead back with an RBI single in the sixth and, with a three-up, three-down side from Montevallo, took a 6-5 advantage into the seventh.

Though the Falcons gave up a pair of hits in Shorter's final at-bat, the defense held strong to keep the lead at just one heading into the bottom.

Robinson's second double of the day brought Lanyon to the plate as the winning run. The Tampa, Fla. native sent one out over the right center wall for a walk-off, two-run home run. Lanyon's game-winner counted as her fifth of the season.
