Women's Lacrosse Drops First Conference Game To Lander

MONTEVALLO, ALA. - The University of Montevallo women's lacrosse team dropped their first conference game to Lander 9-18.
 
Two goals by the Falcons' Jodi Morawiec in the first two minutes of play put the falcons ahead early. Unfortunately for Montevallo, Lander was able to rattle off seven straight goals before Morawiec added her third goal with 11:45 to go in the second period. The Bearcats added two goals prior to the Falcon's final score of the half, from Claire Withington at the 1:42 mark. Lander managed another two goals before the break, bringing the score at halftime to 4-11.
 
The first goal of the second half came from the Bearcats. Montevallo then traded goals with Lander for the rest of the quarter. Kiley Shea scored with an assist from Anja Kuys at the 11:14 mark in the third period, before a goal from the Bearcats pushed their lead to 5-13. Kuys put one in the back of the net on a free position shot before another goal from Lander at the end of the third period, making the score 6-14.
 
The final period started with two Bearcat goals, before Jenna Piazza contributed the seventh goal of the game for Montevallo. One free position goal was added by lander prior to a free position goal from Shea at the 5:28 mark in the fourth period. Piazza added her second goal with 0:53 to go after a Bearcat score, cementing the final score at 9-18.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Jodi Morawiec scored a team high three goals. 
  • Montevallo won the turnover battle, 21-24.
  • The Bearcats picked up more groundballs 38-29.
  • Ashley Shen had a game high eight ground balls, with six caused turnovers.
