Softball Sweeps West Georgia in Final Regular Season Series

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Montevallo softball team swept a doubleheader with West Goergia to secure a spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament on May 3-6 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala. 
 
GAME ONE 
The Falcons took game one after a dominant 10-1 six-inning victory that saw Montevallo outhit UWG 12-3. 
 
With Shelby Sloan reaching on a single and Alisha Lanyon on first after a walk, freshman catcher Lily Stone singled through the right side and scored Lanyon with a West Georgia error. The Wolves answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first to go into the second with a 1-1 tie. 
 
Freshman righthander Ariana Pinder kept West Georgia off the board for the next two innings before the Falcons took control of the game with a six-run fourth inning. 
 
Falcon second baseman Maddie Taylor kicked off UM's high scoring inning with a lead-off double. Two batters later, Sydnee Reaves recorded Montevallo's first RBI on the day with a single into center. Senior Shelby Sloan went yard for a three-run bomb to put Montevallo on top 5-1. Following a Stone walk, Taylor Robinson's RBI double increased the Falcons' lead before a Wolves error scored Robinson and lifted Montevallo to a 7-1 lead after four.
 
Pinder blanked UWG's offense for the next two innings to keep Montevallo's six-run advantage heading into the sixth. 
 
Montevallo put up three runs in the top of the sixth to put West Georgia in danger of being run ruled. A pair of base hits and a walk loaded the bases for Georgia Hughes with no outs. A sacrifice fly from the Falcons' right fielder scored one before a West Georgia wild pitch scored the second run of the inning. Freshman short stop Olivia Bergert scored Montevallo's final run of the game with an RBI single to give Montevallo a 10-1 advantage. 
 
Pinder ended the game early after a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth to give Montevallo the series victory over West Georgia.

GAME NOTES
  • The Falcons scored 10 runs on 12 hits with eight RBI, three doubles, a home run and two sacrifice hits. 
  • Lily Stone had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate with two runs scored while Shelby Sloan produced the most runs with a pair of hits, a home run, and three RBI. 
  • Alisha Lanyon and Maddie Taylor each went 2-for-4 at the plate with Lanyon scoring two runs and Taylor scoring a run while driving in another. 
  • Freshman righthander Ariana Pinder threw all six innings of game one with just one earned run on three hits with just two walks. 
 
GAME TWO
Montevallo secured a trip to Choccolocco Park for the GSC Tournament after completing the sweep of West Georgia with a back-and-forth 15-13 extra-inning win on Saturday. 
 
The Falcons fell behind early after UWG put up four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead. 
 
The score held until UM erupted for five runs in the top of the third to gain control of the game. With the bases juiced, senior Shelby Sloan singled out to center to score the first run before sophomore Alisha Lanyon blasted a ball over the fence for a three-run bomb to tie the game at 4-4. In the following at-bat, Montevallo's Taylor Robinson squared up a pitch for a solo shot that lifted UM to its first lead of the game, 5-4. 
 
West Georgia would go on to regain a three-run advantage after another four-run inning from the Wolves. 
 
With two runners on, Sloan drove in another run to trim the lead down to two. Lanyon notched another RBI in the fourth to cut UWG's lead down to 8-7. UWG kept the scoring going with a two-run bottom half to extend its lead to 10-7. 
 
A huge fifth inning from the Falcons put Montevallo back on top. UM loaded the bases with three walks to kick off the inning before Sloan drove in her third run of the game with an RBI single through the right side. With the bases still juiced, a Lanyon double knotted the game at 10-10. Robinson gave Montevallo its first lead, 12-10, since the third inning with a two RBI single. Falcon second baseman Maddie Taylor got in on the action with an RBI single of her own to put the Falcons up 13-10 heading into the bottom half. 
 
West Georgia forced extra innings with a pair of runs in the fifth and one in the sixth while both sides failed to score in the seventh. 
 
With Olivia Bergert and Sydnee Reaves reaching base with just one out in the eighth, Sloan added two more RBI to her ledger with a bases clearing double to give Montevallo a late 15-13 lead. 
 
Freshman Taylor Lloyd didn't allow a UWG base runner in the bottom of the eighth to take the game 15-13 and secure a spot in the conference tournament.

  • Montevallo plated its 15 runs on 14 hits with three doubles, two home runs, and four stolen bases with just three strikeouts. 
  • Alisha Lanyon highlighted the Falcons offense in game two, producing six RBI on a 2-for-5 performance at the plate with a three-run shot and a double. 
  • Shelby Sloan had herself a day with five RBI on a 3-for-6 mark in the box with a double. 
  • Taylor Robinson and Maddie Taylor both went 2-for-3 at the plate with Robinson driving in three runs with a home run. 
  • Freshman Taylor Lloyd gets the win after throwing 4.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts and just three runs scored on six hits. 
 
UP NEXT: The Falcons will make the trip to Oxford, Ala. to face No. 3 West Alabama the first round of the GSC Tournament on May 4.
