MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer took its first loss of the season after falling to Nova Southeastern, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Montevallo fell behind early after Nova Southeastern found the back of the net just 9:50 into the first half off the rebound of an impeccable save from senior keeper
Emily Hounsell. The Falcons looked to equalize with back-to-back corners moments after the goal but
Alea Taube's header was cleared away by the NSU defense.
The rest of the first half turned into a defensive battle with neither side giving an inch. In the final 20 minutes, both sides combined for a total of five shots heading into the break.
Montevallo's defense had its work cut out early in the second half when NSU fired two shots on goal before the end of the 48
th minute but Hounsell continued her impressive afternoon in net with a pair of saves.
The Falcons managed to break through the stifling NSU to put their first shot on frame in the 58
th minute with a
Madeline Milby free kick that was turned aside. Milby nearly brought the game back level six minutes later but her shot sailed wide left with 26 minutes remaining.
In the 72
nd minute, Hounsell made her eleventh save of the day, setting a new career-high for the Falcons' second-year keeper.
Nova Southeastern applied continuous pressure to the Falcons defense and, despite a trio of saves from Hounsell, scored the second goal of the match with 11:24 to go.
The Falcons couldn't produce enough offense in the final minutes and fell, 2-0, for the first loss of the 2023 campaign.
