MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's soccer picked up a much-needed win after defeating Newberry, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Falcons were on the attack early and often with
Branko Buljan Ivelich firing the first shot of the game just six minutes into the contest. Sophomore midfielder
Dawid Adamski nearly put Montevallo in front at the 38:55 mark but his shot sailed wide right.
A pair of dangerous shot from the Wolves nearly left the Falcons in an early hole but an impressive save from
Tomas Valles Gilbert kept the game knotted at 0-0. Montevallo then fired back-to-back shots on frame from
Michael Milliron and
Julio Rojo but the NC keeper kept Montevallo off the board with 20 minutes left in the first.
With nine minutes left in the half, Montevallo's
Brock Barbee played a beautiful ball upfield to Joshua Owen who played a cross into the box that was finished by junior
Alvaro Martin Lopez to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Montevallo nearly opened up a two-goal lead early in the second off a
Mark Shoebridge shot on goal, but the Newberry keeper turned the shot aside.
Newberry brought the score back level with 31 minutes to go off a penalty kick goal caused by a speedy Wolves counterattack.
Martin Lopez looked to add his second goal of the day but was denied by the keeper who could not stop Buljan Ivelich's rebound shot. The sophomore midfielder lifted the Falcons to a 2-1 advantage with 23 minutes on the clock.
The Falcons defense looked shaky in the final ten minutes but timely saves from Valles Gilbert and a a pair of team saves secured Montevallo's first victory of the season.

- For the second-consecutive game, Buljan Ivelich found the back of the net for a team-high four points and two goals.
