GREENWOOD, S.C. – Montevallo men's soccer fell to 1-4 after dropping a road matchup at Lander, 3-0, on Saturday, Sept. 16.
The Bearcats attacked Montevallo's back line early, forcing
Tomas Valles Gilbert to make his first save of the night just 3:23 into the contest before Lander broke through the Falcon defense and put the first goal on the board in the 13
th minute.
A four-man substitution seamed to spark Montevallo's attack with the Falcons being awarded the first corner of the night in the 29
th minute, just moments after the fresh legs took the field. A blocked shot from right foot of senior midfielder
Mark Shoebridge marked UM's first of the night in the 30
th minute.
Inside the final three minutes, Montevallo's
Otger Vendrell played a beautiful freekick into the box for a waiting
George Rathmill whose header was turned away by a diving save from the LU keeper, leaving Montevallo in a 1-0 at the half.
Lander extended its lead with an early second half goal that left Montevallo down 2-0 just 1:24 into the second.
The Falcons struggled to find a rhythm offensively for the next 20 minutes until
Hugo Cakurda found himself one-on-one with the Bearcat keeper who made another diving save to keep the Falcons off the board.
Lander added its third goal of the night in the 80
th minute, leaving the Falcons with the loss on the road.
