Weekend Preview: Women's Soccer

 MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer kicks off a four-game road trip this weekend with a trip to Rome, Ga. on Friday, Sept. 22 before heading to Cleveland, Tenn. on Sept. 24.
 
So Far This Season…
The Falcons began the season with three-straight non-conference wins capped off by a 1-0 win over West Alabama on Sept. 8, the first win over the Tigers since 2012. Montevallo was handed its first loss of the season at the hands of Nova Southeastern on Sept. 10. The Falcons then began the 2023 conference season with a 0-0 draw with West Georgia on Friday, Sept. 15 before taking the first conference win of the season with a 1-0 victory over then unbeaten Valdosta State. The Falcons' defense remains one of the toughest to score on in the nation with a .667 shutout percentage (14th) through six games.
 
Scouting Shorter: WATCH | LIVE STATS
The Hawks come into the weekend with a 1-5 overall record with the lone victory for Shorter coming against Brewton Parker College on Sept. 2. The Hawks have opened GSC play with matches against Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama, both of which were losses for the Hawks. Shorter boasts a trio of Hawks with multiple goals scored this season, led by senior Juliana Torres with two goals and one assist for a total of five points.
 
Scouting Lee: WATCH | LIVE STATS
The Falcons are set to face off with unbeaten Lee, who ranks No. 19 in the nation and No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches South Region. The Lady Flames opened the season with a draw against Lenior-Rhyne before defeating Carson Newman, 3-0. Lee then rattled off a four-game unbeaten streak with the only blemish being a draw with North Georgia on Sept. 6. Lee opened league-play with back-to-back wins over in-state foes West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville. Lee sits alongside West Florida for the top spot in the GSC with a 2-0 conference record.
 
Series History Against Shorter:
Since the Falcons rejoined the league in 2017, Montevallo has posted an unbeaten 6-0 record against the Hawks. In the six matchups since then, Montevallo has scored a total of 32 goals while not allowing a single Shorter goal. In the most recent matchup back in 2022, the Falcons dominated the Hawks on Senior Day, taking the game by a score of 10-0. Shorter boasts a trio of Hawks with multiple goals scored this season, led by senior Juliana Torres with two goals and one assist for a total of five points.
 
Series History Against Lee:
From Oct. 15, 2017 to the present, Montevallo and Lee have met twice in the same season on three separate occasions. The first came in 2018 with Montevallo took the regular season matchup 3-2 before taking the post-season matchup, 1-0. In 2019, the two sides battled twice with Montevallo coming out as the victor in both matchups. A season ago, both squads met on the pitch in Montevallo, Ala. for both meetings with Montevallo taking a 2-1 win in the regular season before Lee ended the Falcons' GSC Championship run with a 3-2 win on Oct. 30, 2022.
 
Player Highlights:
The Falcons' attack is led by graduate midfielder Kaeri Ward with a pair of goals for a total of nine points. Montevallo's Madeline Milby is tied for tops in the league with three assists for the top mark on the squad. Montevallo's veteran keeper Emily Hounsell is one of the best in the conference with the league's most shutouts with three in her first five 2023 starts.
