Weekend Preview: Women's Soccer

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Falcons' women's soccer squad is slated to take on two in-state foes this weekend with trips to West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville.

So Far This Season…

Montevallo has proven to be one of the nation's top defenses with six shutouts on the season and with four consecutive clean sheets in the Falcons' last three games. Montevallo's .750 percentage ranks first in the GSC and fifth in all of Div. II. The Falcons enter the weekend with a 5-1-2 record and an unbeaten 2-0-2 mark in Gulf South Conference action. Montevallo went through the non-conference slate with a 3-1 record with the lone loss coming against No. 24 Nova Southeastern on Sept. 10. Over this past weekend, Montevallo scored six goals with six different Falcons in the second 6-0 shutout of the season with the win at Shorter. The Falcons then drew 0-0 with unbeaten, No. 19 Lee on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Scouting West Alabama: WATCH | LIVE STATS

The Tigers enter the game with a 2-4-2 overall record and a 2-1-1 mark in conference play. West Alabama tallied a winless 0-3-1 record in the non-conference slate with Montevallo taking the non-conference matchup, 1-0, on Sept. 8. In league competition, UWA boasts wins over Shorter and West Georgia with the Tigers falling to Lee on Sept. 15. In West Alabama's most recent outing, the Tigers drew with Valdosta State, 1-1, on Sept. 24. The Tigers frontline is led by Venla Makela's nine points off of four goals and one assist with Summer Fox and Sierra O'Grady each adding two goals to their ledger.

Scouting Alabama Huntsville: WATCH | LIVE STATS

Alabama Huntsville holds a 4-3 record and a 2-2 mark in league play heading into the matchup with Montevallo on Sunday, Oct. 1. The Chargers tallied a 2-1 non-conference record with wins over Trevecca Nazarene and Tusculum before falling to Nova Southeastern. UAH opened league play with a 5-0 win over Shorter before falling to Lee, 3-0, on Sept. 17. The Chargers rebounded with a win over Valdosta State before West Georgia took a 3-2 victory in UAH's most recent outing. The Chargers boast a well-balanced attack led by four goals from sophomore Jayla Gillespie with four more Chargers scoring two or more goals.

Series History Against West Alabama:

Since 2011, the series has been an even match for both sides with West Alabama holding a 4-3-3 record over the Falcons in that span. In 2011 and 2012, the Falcons took both meetings before West Alabama rattled off four consecutive wins from 2013 to 2018. The two squads drew in each of the last three meetings before the Falcons tallied a 1-0 victory on Sept. 8.

Series History Against Alabama Huntsville: 

Since 1996, the Falcons and the Chargers have faced off 25 times with Montevallo holding a 14-8-3 all-time record in the series. In the first eleven matchups, Montevallo held a 6-4-1 record over UAH before dominating the series with an 8-4-2 record since 2006. A season ago, the Falcons and the Chargers tied 1-1 on Oct. 7, 2022.

Player Highlights:

The Falcons have 13 players on the roster who have scored a goal in the first eight games of the season with graduate midfielder Kaeri Ward leading the squad at three goals. A trio of Falcons have assisted on three goals this season: Miranda Fragoso, Morgan Goehring, and Madeline Milby. Senior goalkeeper Emily Hounsell is one of the top keepers in the nation with a league-high six shutouts. Their .500 goals-against average ranks 22nd among national leaders.
