Volleyball to Host Valdosta State and West Georgia in GSC Weekend Matchups

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team host the Valdosta State Blazers on Friday, Sept. 29 and the West Georgia Wolves on Saturday, Sept. 30 in two huge GSC matches.
 
Last Time Out
Montevallo is coming off a win in their last match against Shorter on Tuesday, Sept. 26. The Falcons pulled off a reverse sweep after dropping the first two sets then winning the last three in an impressive road victory.

About Montevallo
Last season, the Falcons lost their lone match against the Valdosta State Blazers on the road 1-3. Prior to the loss, Montevallo was on a five-match win streak against the Blazers. UM also played West Georgia once in 2022 and won 3-1 in their only meeting. The Falcons are 11-2 against the Wolves dating back to 2013.
 
Alex Koontz is coming off an impressive 15 kill, seven dig and four block match against Shorter. The junior transfer is fifth on the Falcons with 57 kills while she also has 48 digs and 10 total blocks on the season.
 
Kalin Duncan started her first match of the year on Tuesday against the Hawks and did not disappoint as she totaled 21 assists and 10 digs, both her second highest of the season in both statistics.
 
Freshman middle blocker, Ellise Hanson, had a career-high five blocks in her last match and it was the highest block total for any Falcon this season.
 
As a team, Montevallo has the third highest dig total in the Gulf South Conference with 751 while Casey Hendrixson is ninth in the GSC with 143 digs.
 
Scouting Valdosta State
The Blazers come in first in the GSC after defeating West Georgia, Shorter and Lee for their first 3-0 start to conference play since 2015. Valdosta State has won four straight matches and is coming off a 3-1 victory over Albany State.
 
As a team, they lead the conference in points, total attacks, kills, total blocks and digs.
 
The Blazers are led by a trio of juniors (Mackenzie Murray, Jojo Smith, Christina Pettigrew) who combine for 464 of the teams 740 kills while Murray is fifth in the GSC with 176 total kills. As a team, Valdosta has a .198 hit percentage and is second in the conference with 657 assists.
 
Defensively, Mallory Roney has 200 digs on the season while she also has 25 blocks on the season. The Blazers have the top two leaders in blocks, Christina Pettigrew leads the league and VSU with 64 total blocks while Katie Callenberger has 51.

Scouting West Georgia
The Wolves play Alabama Huntsville on Friday and then travel to Montevallo on Saturday. West Georgia comes into the weekend with a 7-5 overall record and a 1-2 GSC record. UWG is coming off a 3-2 win against Shorter on Sept. 23.
 
As a team, West Georgia has the third highest hit percentage at .208 and are also fifth in assists and kills.
 
The Wolves are led by the conference kills leader, Zoe LaBreche, who has 193 kills on 470 attacks. LaBreche also leads the Wolves with 20 aces which is the sixth highest in the GSC.
 
Defensively, Kelli Kaiser leads UWG with 210 digs which is second in the conference, two behind the leader. The Wolves are dominant at the net as they have six players with 20 blocks or more.
 
First serve against Valdosta State is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 and the Falcons will take on West Georgia at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
