MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's soccer drops its 2023 home-opener to North Georgia, 2-1, on Thursday afternoon.
Montevallo fell behind quickly after North Georgia found the mark just seven minutes into the contest. The Falcons nearly answered quickly but sophomore
Hugo Cakurda's shot on goal was denied by the UNG keeper.
The Falcons had back-to-back goal chances in the 33
rd and 35
th minutes but each time UM was turned away by the Nighthawk's keeper. On the following counterattack, North Georgia stretched its lead to 2-0 with just under ten minutes left in the half.
Montevallo had a pair of opportunities to put a goal on the board before half, but the UNG defense stifled any Falcon offense in the first 45 minutes.
UM started the second half aggressively with Cakurda steaking up field for an early shot that tested the UNG keeper but was turned away. Just 11:22 into the second,
Branko Buljan Ivelich fired a laser into the back of the net to slice the lead in half with his first Montevallo goal.
The Falcons stayed on the attack with four shots in the next ten minutes before the game turned into a chippy defensive battle following yellow cards for both sides in the next moments.
Montevallo managed to string together several scoring opportunities in the games closing stages, but the UNG backline kept the Falcons out of the goal and secured the game.
