Montevallo Soars Past West Alabama For 10th Win

Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's basketball eclipsed the 10-win mark with a 74-59 win over West Alabama on Wednesday night.
 
The Falcons caught fire from range early with the Falcons knocking down a trio of triples in the opened five minutes. Veteran Marisa Snodgrass got Montevallo on the board to start with her first three of the night before freshman Cali Smallwood added another triple to put the Falcons on top with 6:46 on the clock. Out of the media timeout, Leisha Steger converted a three-point play to lift Montevallo to a four-point lead before A.K. Eastman stretched the lead to 14-8 with 3:48 to go. Savannah Cook knocked down her first bucket of the night to close the quarter with UM on top 21-15.
 
UM continued its hot shooting with a pair of Eastman threes to start the second quarter. Snodgrass added her third triple of the half to put the Falcons up by 10 with 6:22 to play in the half. Montevallo opened a 10-0 run at the 5:09 mark after another deuce from Cook and continued its run with Smallwood capping a 19-4 Montevallo run with a lay-in at the 2:51 mark. In the final 8:57 of the half, Montevallo outscored the Tigers 21-9 with a 56-percent shooting mark in the quarter.
 
Leisha Steger scored the first four points on the second half with her first three of the game and an added free throw at the 8:09 mark. A minute later, Snodgrass found Smallwood in transition for another Falcon triple to open Montevallo's second 20-point lead at 52-32. A scoring drought from the Falcons let the Tigers go on a 5-0 run to trim the lead to 15 at the third quarter media. Snodgrass beat the shot clock with 1:24 to go for the first field goal from either side since the media timeout. Montevallo led 58-37 heading into the fourth.
 
To start the fourth quarter, Snodgrass eclipsed the 20-point mark for just the second time this season with a three at the 8:49 mark. Smallwood answered a UWA bucket with her third triple of the night with six minutes to play to put the Falcons up 67-42. The Tigers trimmed down the Falcons advantage with a 11-0 run in the final three minutes but Montevallo's advantage proved to be enough, giving Montevallo a 74-59 win at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st | Montevallo scored 21 first-quarter points on an impressive 7-for-13 shooting with a 4-for-7 mark from three-point range in the opening ten minutes. Marisa Snodgrass led all scorers in the quarter with six points on a pair of triples.  
2nd | The Falcons continued the hot shooting with an even better 56.3 percent shooting clip while adding another three threes in the second. At the half, Montevallo outrebounded the Tigers 15-9 with a total of 22 points off turnovers.
3rd | Montevallo went cold in the third, shooting just 23-percent from the field with all three buckets coming from beyond the arc. With an added quartet of free throws, Montevallo took a 58-37 lead in the fourth.
4th | Montevallo struggled from the floor in the final stanza with a 3-for-10 mark from the floor but an 8-of-9 clip from the stripe kept the Tigers at bay.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Marisa Snodgrass led both teams with 20 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting and 5-of-6 from three-point land to go along with six assists and four steals.
  • The Falcons were efficient from the floor with a 42.3 percent shooting mark and a 44.4 percent from long range.
  • UM outrebounded West Alabama 34-30 with the Falcons capitalizing on the Tigers' mistakes for 34 points off turnovers.
  • Montevallo's 15-point margin of victory is the third highest this season.
