Falcons Heading To Georgia For Matchup With Wolves

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's basketball travels to Carrollton, Ga. on Saturday, Jan. 20 for a weekend clash with West Georgia.
 
Coming off a 15-point win over in-state foe West Alabama, Montevallo enters the weekend matchup with a 10-6 overall record and an 8-5 mark in Gulf South Conference action which places the Falcons in the No. 4 slot on the GSC standings.
 
So Far This Season…
Montevallo boasts a 10-6 record overall with an 8-5 mark in conference play after starting the season with a 2-1 record in the nonconference schedule with wins over Nova Southeastern and Birmingham-Southern. To kick off the league schedule, Montevallo grabbed a pair of road victories with a 78-67 win over Alabama Huntsville before topping West Alabama, 70-56. The Falcons returned home for a 66-57 win over Shorter before hosting Lee in the first GSC loss of the season. Montevallo then went on a road trip to the Magnolia State for a pair of wins over Delta State and Mississippi College on Dec. 8 and Dec. 10, respectively. UM dropped back-to-back games against West Georgia and then No. 8 Union before rebounding with a 59-43 win over Christian Brothers to start the new year. Montevallo posted a 1-2 record on a three-game road trip with a win over West Florida and losses to Valdosta State and Auburn Montgomery. Most recently, Montevallo defeated West Alabama, 74-59, at the newly renamed Central State Bank Arena.
 
The Falcons are the league leaders in turnovers per game with a league-low 13.3 per game while dishing out 13.2 assists per game which ranks second among conference leaders. Montevallo also turns over its opponents with the league's third-most steals per game at an 8.9 average. Montevallo's 77.1 percent mark from the charity stripe is the best in the GSC while ranking No. 22 on the national leaderboards while knocking down 13.7 per game on a 17.75 attempts per game average.
 
Scouting West Georgia: WATCH | LIVE STATS
The Wolves enter the matchup with a 10-6 overall record and a 6-6 mark in conference action. West Georgia opened the season with back-to-back wins over Albany State and Tuskegee in the GSC/SIAC Crossover. The Wolves then took down Talladega, 78-50, on Nov. 18 before opening the GSC schedule with a four-point win over Auburn Montgomery on Nov. 25. With a loss to Christian Brothers on Nov. 30, West Georgia began a four-game skid. The Wolves fell to Union, 96-86, on Dec. 3 before falling to Valdosta State at home on Dec. 7. West Georgia dropped a game to West Florida, 69-67, on Dec. 10. In the first matchup between the two teams, West Georgia walked away with a 75-62 win before defeating No. 24 North Georgia, 98-90, on Dec. 19. The Wolves rattled off four-consecutive wins over Alabama Huntsville, West Alabama, Shorter and Lee to cap a six-game win streak. UWG has dropped two in a row with the most recent loss coming at Mississippi College on Jan. 13.
The Wolves rank second in the conference with a scoring offense of 72.8 points per game while holding opponents to 65.9 points per game. UWG cleans up the glass with a second-best 39.5 rebounds per game with a second-highest defensive rebounds at 28 per contest.  
 
West Georgia's Zuriyah Davis is the second-highest scorer in the league with a 19.5 points per game mark while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and 36 percent from long range. Graduate forward Jada Powell is the league's second-best rebounder with an average of 8.3 boards per game.
 
Series History Against West Georgia:
West Georgia holds a seven-game advantage over the Falcons with a 28-21 record since the series began in 1979. Since the Falcons rejoined the GSC, Montevallo is 6-4 against the Wolves with UWG taking the first matchup during the 2017-18 season. The Falcons bounced back with consecutive wins in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. Following a loss to UWG, Montevallo rattled off three wins in a row from 2020-21 to 2021-22. When the two sides faced off in mid-December, West Georgia came away with a 75-62 win over Montevallo.
 
Player Highlights:
Marisa Snodgrass continues to be on top of the league with the most steals per game at an average of 2.88 per contest. The veteran guard is one of the GSC's top assisters with a 4.7 assist per game mark and a 2.78 assist to turnover ratio which both rank second among the league's leaders. Freshman Cali Smallwood leads the Falcons scoring with an average of 11.3 points per game on a 37.9 percent mark from the field while also leading the squad with 6.2 boards per game. Snodgrass follows closely behind with an 11.1 ppg mark while Isabel Grimes rounds out the top scorers with 10.7 points per game.
