Men's Soccer Heads South for Pair of Road Contests

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo men's soccer team heads down south for a pair of conference road contests this weekend, facing off against West Florida (Oct. 11) and Spring Hill (Oct. 13).

So Far This Season…
Montevallo enters this weekend with an overall record of 5-2-2, along with a 3-1 mark in GSC play.

The Falcons opened the season with a 3-3 draw at Catawba and a 1-0 win over Belmont Abbey. Montevallo returned home and defeated Carson-Newman 4-2, before drawing with Lander 1-1. The Falcons suffered its first loss of the season on Sept. 18, falling on the road to Anderson 5-1. Montevallo opened conference play with a pair of contests at home, defeating Trevecca Nazarene 3-0 and falling to Lee 3-0.

Last week, Montevallo captured a pair of wins over in-state foes, defeating conference opponents West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville. A late goal in the final seconds and a clean sheet led the Falcons to secure a 1-0 win at West Alabama on Friday. Montevallo scored three unanswered goals on Sunday to defeat Alabama Huntsville 3-1.

As a team, Montevallo has scored 17 goals and fired 129 shots with 62 being on goal. The Falcons have also recorded 15 assists, 50 saves and 38 corner kicks. The Falcons lead the GSC in saves and shots on goal, while UM ranks in the top five in multiple statistical categories including goals, points, assists and shots.

Individually, Cristobal Porter leads the Falcons in goals (four), assists (six), points (14), shots (36), shots on goal (15), and game winners (two). The Gulf South Conference named Porter as the GSC Player and Freshman of the Week after his efforts last weekend. Mark Shoebridge has been solid for the Falcons as well contributing eight points, three goals, and two assists. In goal, Tomas Valles has recorded 47 saves and 15 goals against. The Falcon goalkeeper leads the GSC in saves (47) and is tied for first in shutouts (three). Valles garnered Goalkeeper of the Week honors last weekend.

Scouting West Florida: WATCH | LIVE STATS
West Florida enters the matchup with an overall record of 4-1-2 and a 2-0-2 mark in GSC play. The Argonauts went 2-1 in non-conference play, capturing wins over Saint Leo and Rollins, while falling to Tampa. West Florida opened GSC play with a 5-2 win over Mississippi College, before drawing with Delta State 2-2. Last weekend saw the Argonauts capture a 6-1 win over Trevecca Nazarene and a scoreless draw at Lee.

Keegan Ancelin leads the team in goals (seven), points (14), shots (26), shots on goal (14), and game winners (two). Ancelin scored three goals against Trevecca Nazarene last weekend. Nicolas Meckien and Edward Alonzi have split time in goal, playing in four games each. Meckien (3-1-0) has recorded 17 saves and seven goals against, while Alonzi (0-0-2) has totaled two saves and four goals against.

Series History Against West Florida:
The Falcons and Argonauts have a long series history dating back to 1995. In 31 games played, West Florida holds a 18-9-4 advantage. The Argonauts earned a 1-0 win over the Falcons in Montevallo last year. The last UM victory in the series came in 2021, while the last Falcon victory in Pensacola came in 2017.

Scouting Spring Hill: WATCH | LIVE STATS
Spring Hill holds an overall record of 3-5 and a 3-2 mark in GSC play. The Badgers dropped its three non-conference contests, falling to Lynn, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Embry-Riddle. The Badgers opened conference play successfully, securing a pair of identical 3-2 home wins over Delta State and Mississippi College. The Badgers followed that up with a 2-0 loss to West Alabama. Spring Hill traveled to Tennessee last weekend, earning a 2-1 win over Lee and a 2-1 loss to Trevecca Nazarene.

Three Badgers have a team-leading six points in Quinn Carper (three goals), Adrian Rodriguez (two goals, two assists) and Brett Stow (two goals, two assists). In goal, Martin Gomez has played every minute for Spring Hill, recording 33 saves and 20 goals against.

Series History Against Spring Hill:
The Falcons and Badgers have met 18 times, with Montevallo holding an 11-5-2 advantage in the series. Last year's contest in Montevallo ended in a 1-1 tie. The Falcons earned a 3-2 win over the Badgers the year before in Mobile.
