Falcons Take On West Florida and Valdosta State in Home Weekend Matches

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team continues home stand with two tough GSC opponents as they welcome in West Florida on Friday, Oct. 4 and Valdosta State on Saturday, Oct. 5.
 
Last Time Out
Montevallo is looking to get back in the win column as they lost their last time out against Mississippi College in four sets. In the match, Nikol Antova recorded a double-double with 19 kills and 15 digs. Colton Thompson had 24 assists, eight digs and two service aces.

About Montevallo
Four matches into the conference schedule, the Falcons are fourth in the Gulf South with 608 kills, tied for third with 94 total blocks and sixth with 88 service aces. UM is in the middle of one of their toughest stretches in the schedule as they will face West Florida (who was picked to win the conference in the preseason poll) and Valdosta State (who was picked to finish third in the GSC in the preseason poll).
 
The Falcons will look to Nikol Antova who is leading Montevallo with 189 terminations on the season. The back-to-back GSC Freshman of the Week award winner is three kills away from leading the conference in kills. With 26 digs on Tuesday against Mississippi College, Ava Wind has moved to fourth place in the GSC with 205 digs on the season. Colton Thompson is currently seventh in the GSC with 254 assists and she is eighth with 19 service aces.
 
Last season against West Florida, Montevallo lost their lone regular season match up against the Argonauts in three sets. At the GSC Tournament, the Falcons were bounced out in the semifinal by UWF.
 
Scouting West Florida
The Argonauts come in with an 8-5 overall record and a perfect 3-0 record in GSC play. West Florida opened up the conference schedule with sweeps over Valdosta State and Union. Their most recent matchup, UWF won in four sets over Christian Brothers.
 
UWF is led by a trio of Argonauts who were picked to the preseason All-GSC team: Meg Brackhan, Gabi Moulton and Jenna Zydlo. The Argonauts currently have four players in the top five in hitting percentage while they lead the league with a .252 team hit percent. Moulton leads the GSC with 512 assists (10.12 per set). As a team, West Florida is tied with the Falcons with 94 total blocks, but they are second in assists and kills.
 
Against West Florida, UM is 6-25 all-time and they have not beaten the Argonauts since 2003. At home, Montevallo is 4-9 against UWF.
 
Scouting Valdosta State
The Blazers come into the weekend with a 7-5 overall and a 1-1 GSC record. They opened up conference play against West Florida which they were swept in Pensacola. Their GSC victory came against Auburn Montgomery where they edged out the Warhawks in five sets.
 
Valdosta State is led by middle hitter, Christina Pettigrew who was named to the preseason all-GSC team. Pettigrew is currently eighth in the GSC with a .261 hitting percentage and she is 11th with 17 service aces. Kaia Baker leads the conference with 5.10 digs per set. As a team, VSU is sixth in the GSC with 670 points, 488 assists, 525 kills and 78 total blocks.
 
Against Valdosta State, Montevallo is 34-10 all-time and they have won the three consecutive matches. Last season, UM won both regular season matches and came back from a 0-2 deficit in the GSC tournament to stun the Blazers.
