Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Late game heroics by
Cristobal Porter and a clean sheet by
Tomas Valles Gilbert lifted Montevallo to a 1-0 win over West Alabama on the road on Friday night.
The Tigers started the game fast, firing the first shot on goal less than a minute into the contest. Valles would come up with his first save of the night, along with another save a few minutes later to keep the Tigers off the board early.
Montevallo began to find its footing, as
Alex Errasti provided the first shot for UM in the seventh minute and
Hugo Cakurda followed that up with the first shot on goal in the ninth minute.
Valles continued to put in the work in goal, capturing a pair of saves in the 16
th and 22
nd minute. After a couple of UWA shots in the next few minutes, the Falcons got back on the attacking end with Cakurda recording another shot on goal in the 28
th minute.
Julius Rahmig provided the only other shot on goal of the half, as neither team would find the back of the net, sending the game scoreless into the break. The evenly matched first half saw both teams record eight shots in the first 45 minutes, while UWA had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Both squads came out of the break swinging, recording shots on goal in the first five minutes. Valles earned his sixth save of the game, saving a UWA shot in the 49
th minute, while Montevallo's shot on goal came off the foot of
Cristobal Porter in the 50
th minute. After both teams saw limited shots through the next 20 minutes, Montevallo looked to attack as
Dominic Kienzle fired a shot in the 72
nd minute, followed by a pair of Cakurda shots on goal in the 73' and 74'. The Tigers controlled the possession late in the game and fired six shots, while UM did not get a shot off. Two of the UWA shots were saved by Valles who ended the night with nine saves total.
The Falcons began to push in the final minute, looking to break the scoreless tie. A costly UWA foul would give the Falcons that opportunity at the 89:42 mark.
Cristobal Porter lined up to take the free kick and ultimately found the back of the net, putting the Falcons ahead 1-0. The Tigers failed to respond in the final seconds, as Montevallo captured its first win in Livingston since 2016.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the GSC.
