JACKSON, Tenn. – Montevallo women's soccer suffered its first Gulf South Conference loss of the season on a last-second goal from Union on the road.
Union nearly drew first blood in the second minute, but a save from graduate goalkeeper
Emily Hounsell kept the game tied. Just seven minutes later, Hounsell was forced to make a second save in the first ten minutes. Hounsell came up big yet again in the 26
th minute to kick a determined Union attack off the board. In the 31
st minute,
Raylene Alcaraz took Montevallo's first shot of the day. Freshman forward
Katelynn Kott nearly put the Falcons on top but the shot off her right foot just missed the mark in the 34
th minute. With just one minute remaining in the half,
Madison Bennett forced the first Union save of the day as the Falcons went into the half knotted in a scoreless battle.
Union saw three quick shots to open the second half but missed the mark twice and was denied by Hounsell for the fourth time. Following a Montevallo yellow card in the 64
th minute, Hounsell recorded their fifth save of the game to keep the Falcons level with Union.
Bailey Raphelt nearly broke the ice in the 71
st minute after a blocked shot from
Marica Miljanovic but the Union keeper denied the Falcons.
Shadia Valenzuela saw a pair of scoring chances in the 75
th and 76
th minutes but just barely missed the mark both times. A final Montevallo scoring chance came in the 85
th minute in the form of a Valenzuela shot on goal but again Union turned the Falcons away. In the final 1:18, a Montevallo foul lead to a Union free kick that was sent into the box and rebounded to an open Lady Bulldog who scored with just 51 seconds remaining. The Falcons couldn't score in the little time remaining and fell on the road, 1-0, for the first time in GSC play.
