HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer advanced to the Gulf South Conference Championship game after a 5-0 rout of third-seeded Union on Friday night.
Graduate keeper
Emily Hounsell was put to work early with their first save coming in the third minute. Sophomore forward
Lainey Farabaugh gave the Falcons an early lead with her seventh goal of the season in the eighth minute with assists from
Isabel Dillehay and
Shadia Valenzuela. The two sides traded shots over the next 15 minutes before
Rilee Bradbury forced the first Union save of the night in the 30
th minute. Hounsell added a second save to their stat line with 13 minutes left in the half. In the 42
nd minute, Dillehay found the back of the net after cleaning up a
Madison Bennett shot that careened off the woodwork to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Shadia Valenzuela came out of the half firing with a shot in the first six minutes before adding a third Montevallo goal just three minutes later. Senior
Bailey Raphelt forced a second Union save with her first shot on goal in the 59
th minute. In the 66
th minute, freshman
Katelynn Kott beat the Union keeper on a solo effort to give Montevallo a 4-0 lead. With two minutes left in the game, Bennett scored the fifth and final goal of the night to send the Falcons to the GSC Championship with a 5-0 win over Union.
