MELBOURNE, Fla. – For the first time since 2007, Montevallo women's soccer is moving on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after taking down Embry-Riddle, 4-3, on Friday afternoon.
The Falcons came out on the attack with
Isabel Dillehay firing the first shot on goal of the day at the 1:04 mark in the first half. The Falcons added four more shots including a shot on goal from
Raylene Alcaraz before
Rilee Bradbury broke the ice in the 10
th minute to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead. Graduate keeper
Emily Hounsell went to work early with their first save of the afternoon in the 17
th minute. In the 29
th minute,
Shadia Valenzuela fired a shot on goal that was denied by the ERAU keeper. Just over a minute later, a Falcon miscue led to the Eagles first goal of the day to knot the game at 1-1. Despite several more Montevallo shots and corner kicks, the Falcons went into the half tied at 1-1.
With an early UM corner in the second half,
Preslee Malavenda found
Marica Miljanovic who beat the keeper and gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead in the 47
th minute. Just two minutes later, Malavenda added a second assist with a Valenzuela goal in the 49
th minute to increase the Falcons' advantage to 3-1. Embry-Riddle rebounded quickly and cut Montevallo's lead down to one just 25 seconds later. In the 53
rd minute,
Morgan Goehring fired back-to-back shots, but each were denied. Hounsell added consecutive saves on back-to-back ERAU shots on goal. Valenzuela found the back of the net for the second time on the day to lift the Falcons to a 4-2 lead with 19 minutes to go. The Eagles nearly sparked a comeback with a third goal in the 87
th minute but the Falcons controlled possession down the stretch to move on to the first second-round game of Head Coach
Jake Wyman's career.
With Montevallo's highest seed ever in the NCAA Tournament, the Falcons won for just the third time in the national tournament to move the all-time record to 3-2 in the big dance.
