MELBOURNE, Fla. – For just the second time in Montevallo history, the Falcons are heading to the Sweet Sixteen after defeating second-seeded Florida Tech, 1-0.
Graduate keeper
Emily Hounsell was put to work early with their first save of the day coming in the eighth minute before another FIT shot looked dangerous in the 10
th minute. In the 19
th minute, Montevallo's
Lainey Farabaugh nearly broke the ice but her shot sailed just high and careened off the crossbar. Just a minute later,
Isabel Dillehay fired a shot that missed out left to leave the game tied at 0-0 in the 20
th minute. Hounsell added a second save in the 31
st minute to keep the game scoreless before making a trio of saves in five minutes to keep the Falcons in the game. The game went into the half tied at 0-0 with Montevallo taking just three shots to the Panthers seven.
Just 52 seconds into the second half, Farabaugh fired a shot that just missed the mark and bounced off the right post. In the 51
st minute,
Rilee Bradbury forced the FIT keeper to make her lone save of the day. A questionable offsides call took a Montevallo goal off the board in the 55
th minute to keep the game knotted at 0-0. In the 68
th minute, Hounsell added another save to her ledger before recording yet another save in the 79
th minute. Off a
Rilee Bradbury corner, a rebounding ball found the feet of sophomore
Morgan Goehring who beat the FIT keeper and gave the Falcons a late 1-0 lead with just eight minute to go. Hounsell made an eighth and final save with 24 seconds on the clock to send the Falcons to a second Sweet Sixteen and the first since 2007.
