Falcons Face No. 2 Columbus State in Final Regular Season Game

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer heads into its final game of the 2024 season against No. 2 Columbus State on Wednesday afternoon.
 
So Far This Season…
Montevallo owns a 10-3-3 overall record with a 9-2-1 mark in conference play after already securing the No. 2 seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Falcons opened the season with a 1-1-1 record in the early non-conference slate with a win over Kentucky Wesleyan and a tie with No. 9 Catawba on the road. Montevallo won its first five GSC games of the season with wins over AUM, Valdosta State, West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville before capping the stretch with a 5-0 win over Christian Brothers on the road. Montevallo suffered its second loss of the season at the hands of Union in a 1-0 affair on Oct. 5. The Falcons responded with dominant wins over Mississippi College and Delta State on Oct. 9 and 12, respectively. Montevallo dropped another contest to Lee on Oct. 16 by a score of 1-0. The Falcons returned to winning ways with a 3-0 win over Trevecca Nazarene before going on the road for a 1-1 draw with No. 8 West Florida. Montevallo closed the GSC schedule with a 1-0 win over Spring Hill on Oct. 26. Most recently, Montevallo took a 2-2 draw on the road against Clayton State on Oct. 30.
 
Montevallo boasts the second-most potent offense in the GSC with a total of 30 goals through 16 games for a 1.875 scoring average. The Falcon attack also ranks second with a total of 25 assists for a total of 85 points and an average of 5.31 points per game. Montevallo backline is also strong with just 12 goals allowed in 16 games for the league's second-best goals against average of .75. The Falcons also hold the second-most shutouts in the league with eight clean sheets on the season.
 
Montevallo's Isabel Dillehay leads the team with seven goals on the season which rank third among conference leaders while also adding a pair of assists for a total of 14 points. Fellow sophomore Morgan Goehring leads Montevallo with five assists while tallying five goals for a total of 15 points in her second season. Shadia Valenzuela ranks second on the squad with six goals while Lainey Farabaugh leads the GSC with four game-winning goals. In the net, Emily Hounsell has proven to be one of the top goalkeepers in the GSC with a league-high eight shutouts and a .75 goals against average while making an average of 2.6 saves per game.

Columbus State enters Wednesday's matchup as the No. 2 team in the United Soccer Coaches rankings with a 15-0-1 record in 2024. The Cougars opened the season with five non-conference including wins over Carson-Newman, Florida Southern, Lincoln Memorial and RV Embry-Riddle. The Cougars opened conference play with a 4-0 win over Georgia College before taking the lone blemish on the schedule with a 2-2 tie at No. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne. Columbus State returned to the PBC schedule with a 17-0 win over Albany State before adding a 3-2 win over No. 19 Catawba on Oct. 9. The Cougars kicked off the heart of the conference schedule with a win at Flagler before adding a 1-0 win over Clayton State on Oct. 16. CSU went on to take down USC Aiken, Georgia Southern and North Georgia to continue a streak of five shutouts.  Last week, Columbus State took a 2-1 win over Lander on Oct. 30 before adding a 4-0 win over USC Beaufort on Nov. 2.
 
Columbus State leads the nation with a total of 72 goals and an average of 4.50 goals per game. The Cougars rank sixth in Div. II with a total of 42 assists for an average of 2.63 assists per game while scoring a nation-leading 186 points with an average of 11.63 points per game. In the net, Columbus State has held its opponents to PBC-best eight goals on the season for an average of .50 goals per game and a total of 10 shutouts.
 
Offensively, Columbus State is led by Sarah Hungerford with a total of 10 goals on the season while four more cougars have scored seven goals apiece. Emma Beddow leads CSU with eight assists on the season to go along with seven goals for a total of 22 points in 2024. In the net, Heidi Harris has spent the most minutes on the pitch with just seven goals allowed in 16 games while adding 29 saves on 87 shots faced for a .806 save percentage.
 
Series History Against Columbus State:
Montevallo trails the all-time series with the Cougars holding a 10-3 record against the Falcosn since 2004. Montevallo won the first two meetings between these two teams in 2004 and 2005. The Falcons added a third series victory with a 1-0 win on Nov. 3, 2009. Columbus State has taken each of the last eight games in the series including a 5-0 win on Nov. 2, 2016.
