Falcons Head to Mississippi for First Conference Road Trip

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball heads to Mississippi for a two-game road trip in the Magnolia State.
 
So Far This Season…
Montevallo heads into its first road trip of the conference schedule with a 6-2 overall record and a 2-0 mark in conference play. The Falcons opened the season with a 93-81 win over Barry before falling to No. 2 Nova Southeastern on Nov. 9. Montevallo rebounded with a 99-92 road win over Spring Hill on Nov. 15 before returning home for an 83-69 win over Point on Nov. 18. The Falcons added an 86-42 rout of Carolina Christian on Nov. 20 before falling to Cumberland on Nov. 24. Montevallo opened the conference season with its first win over Lee since 2018 in a 75-60 battle in Central State Bank Arena. Most recently, the Falcons topped Trevecca, 89-71, on Dec. 7 for the first 2-0 start in conference play since 2021.
 
The Falcons boast one of the top offenses in the league with an average of 84.4 points per game on a 46.1 percent shooting clip with Montevallo shooting 36 percent from long range and 76.3 percent from the free throw line. On the glass, Montevallo averages 37.1 rebounds per game for a 4.3 rebounding margin while the Falcons average 13.1 assists per game and 10.0 steals. Defensively, Montevallo opponents average 75 points per game on a 46.5 shooting mark and 34.2 percent from three-point land. The Falcons are forcing 15.9 turnovers per game and turning those in an average of 13.5 points per game.
 
Individually, Brandon Fussell leads the Falcons as the second-highest scorer in the GSC with an average of 19.8 points per game on an impressive 54 percent shooting with a 41 percent clip from long range and an 80-percent mark from the charity stripe. Jaylen Curry follows closely behind with 16.3 points while Camden Andrews (14.2) and Derek Moore (10.8) also average double-digit scoring numbers. On the glass, Jay Gillispie leads the team with an average of 5.3 rebounds per game.  
 
Scouting Delta State: WATCH | LIVE STATS
Delta State enters the weekend with a 5-3 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference play after starting the season with back-to-back wins over LeMoyne-Owen before topping Lane on the road, 104-77. The Statesmen dropped back-to-back outings against Kentucky Wesleyan and Ouachita Baptist before rebounding with a 79-63 win over Arkansas Monticello. Delta State opened conference play with an 83-68 loss to Union on Dec. 5. Most recently, Delta State topped Christian Brothers, 86-75, on the road on Dec. 7.
 
As a team, the Statesmen average 81.5 points per game on a 44.3-percent shooting clip with a 29.6-percent mark from downtown and a 75.6-percent mark from the free-throw line. On the glass, Delta State averages 26.8 rebounds per game with a -10.3 rebounding margin through eight games. The Statesmen also average 14.1 assists per game and 11.3 steals per game. Defensively, DSU's opponents average just 77.8 points per game on 54.8 percent shooting and 36.6 percent from long range. On the glass, DSU allows 37.0 rebounds per game with opponents averaging 13.5 assists per game.
 
Individually, Delta State is led by Chris Terrell with an average of 18.9 points per game on 49.1 percent shooting while pulling down 4.0 rebounds and averaging 3.8 steals per game. Keithean Brooks follows closely behind with 18.6 points on 39.3 percent shooting while Kolby Horace (15.3) and Jesse Washington (11.7) also average double digits. Washington leads the Statesmen on the glass with an average of 5.5 rebounds per game while Terrell leads the squad with 4.1 assists per game.
 
Series History Against Delta State:
Historically, Delta State controls the series between these two sides with a 15-7 overall record since the series began during the 1983-84 season. Since rejoining the GSC following the 2016-17 season, Montevallo is 6-6 against the Statesmen with the Falcons going 4-2 in central Alabama and 2-4 on the road at Delta State. Most recently, Montevallo defeated Delta State, 77-74, on Feb. 1, 2024.

Mississippi College enters the weekend with a 5-3 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference play after starting the season with a trio of home wins over Central State, Albany State, and Millsaps. The Choctaws then dropped a road matchup at East Central on Nov. 16 before falling to No. 8 Dallas Baptist on Nov. 23. The Choctaws closed the nonconference schedule with an 82-77 win over Arkansas Baptist on Nov. 30. MC opened the GSC schedule with a 57-46 win over Christian Brothers on Dec. 5. Most recently, MC fell to Union, 83-73, on the road on Dec. 7.
 
Offensively, MC averages 63.8 points per game on a 39.4 percent shooting mark while shooting 29.5 percent from long range. The Choctaws are averaging 31.9 rebounds per game while dishing out 8.6 assists per game and recording 5.6 steals per game. Defensivley, MC ranks third in the GSC with an opponent scoring average of 71.0 points per game on 43.3 percent from the floor and 37.7 percent from long range. The Choctaws force 10.9 turnovers per game and convert those into 10.9 points per game.
 
The Choctaws are led by Tyshun Briscoe who is scoring 13.5 points per game on 41.1 percent shooting and 42.9 percent from long range. JJ Harris ranks second on the squad with 13.0 points per game while pulling down 7.1 boards per game. Tyree Bracey leads the Choctaws on the glass with an average of 7.5 boards per game while Tremaine Dixon leads the team with 2.7 assists per game.

Montevallo leads the series against MC with a 7-5 overall record since the series began in 1993. Since Montevallo rejoined the GSC, the Falcons are 6-4 against the Choctaws with wins in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024. Most recently, Montevallo topped MC 78-66 at home after falling to the Choctaws, 100-96, on the road earlier in the season.
