Falcons Move to 4-0 in League Play With 70-58 Win Over Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – Montevallo men's basketball continued its unbeaten start to conference play with a 70-58 win over Mississippi College to close a two-game road trip.
 
The Falcons jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first five and a half minutes of the game with four points from both Brandon Fussell and Derek Moore. MC ended the run with a bucket at the 13:37 mark but a triple from Moore at the end of the shot clock opened a 10-point Montevallo lead. Reese Gurner's first bucket of the night lifted the Falcons to the largest lead in the first half at 18-4 with 11:44 on the clock. Over the next three minutes, MC rattled off an 8-0 run to force a Montevallo timeout at the 9:54 mark and cut the Falcons' lead down to six. Tyson Sexton ended a near three-minute scoreless stretch for the Falcons before a Fussell three extended UM's lead back to 11 with 7:50 left in the half. With 3:59 on the clock, Cole Maddox ended an 8-0 MC run that brought the scores together at 23-20. The Choctaws ended the half with a three in the final minute to head into the break with the Falcons leading 30-27.
 
Out of the break, Mississippi College cut the Falcons lead down to one at the 16:56 mark before Moore cleaned up his own miss to end the run. At the 14:56 mark, Jaylen Curry went for 10-straight Montevallo points beginning with an old-fashioned three-point play. With 12:20 on the clock, Camden Andrews nailed a runner to push Montevallo's advantage out to 48-35. Jay Gillispie knocked down a pair of free-throws to give UM its largest lead of the night at 15 points with 8:48 to go. Montevallo answered a 5-0 MC run with a five-point run of its own to keep the score at 55-40 before Andrews lifted the Falcons to a 16-point lead at the 7:31 mark. Down the stretch, seven of Montevallo's nine points in the final eight minutes came from the charity stripe with the Falcons' defense holding the Choctaws at bay and come away with a 70-58 road win.

  • Montevallo outscored the Choctaws by 15 points at the free throw line with a 23-32 mark while allowing just an 8-11 clip from MC.
  • The Falcons dominated the paint with 38 points to MC's 20.
  • Montevallo never trailed during the contest and lead for a total of 39:52 with a scoreless eight seconds to start being the only point the Falcons weren't in control.
  • Montevallo dominated the glass with a 35-18 rebounding margin with Montevallo pulling down seven offensive boards.
  • Derek Moore and Jay Gillispie lead the Falcons' scoring with 13 points each while Brandon Fussell (12), Jaylen Curry (12) and Camden Andrews (10) all scored double digits.
  • Jaylen Curry led the Falcons on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds.
 
UP NEXT: Montevallo hosts Christian Brothers on Thursday, Dec. 19 to kick off the final weekend of action before the new year.
