Falcons Host Christian Brothers and Union to Close 2024

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball closes the 2024 calendar year with a pair of home matchups against Christian Brothers and Union.
 
So Far This Season…
Montevallo heads into the final two games of December with an 8-2 overall record and a league-best 4-0 mark in conference play after opening the season with a 93-81 win over Bary on Nov. 8. The Falcons dropped a meeting with No. 2 Nova Southeastern before rebounding with a 99-92 road win over Spring Hill on Nov. 15. The Falcons kicked off a five-game homestand with an 83-69 win over Point before topping Carolina Christian on Nov. 20. Montevallo took its second loss of the season on Nov. 24 against Cumberland before tipping off Gulf South Conference action with a 75-60 win over Lee on Dec.  5. Montevallo went on to defeat Trevecca Nazarene, 89-71, in the final home game of the stretch before going on the road for an 89-81 win at Delta State. Most recently, Montevallo topped Mississippi College, 70-58, in Clinton, Miss. on Dec. 14.
 
Through 10 games, Montevallo averages 83.4 points per game on 47.4 percent shooting and 36.6 percent from long range. The Falcons average 36.8 rebounds per game while allowing just 31.2 for a 5.6 rebounding margin. Montevallo spreads the wealth with an average of 12.6 assists per game. Defensively, the Falcons allow just 73.9 points per game on an opponent shooting mark of 45.5 percent. Montevallo's opponents shooting 33.2 percent from the three-point line while the Falcons force 15.1 turnovers per game and convert those into 13.7 points.
 
Individually, Brandon Fussell highlights the Falcons' offensive production with an average of 19.4 points per game which ranks fourth in the GSC. Fussell also leads Montevallo with 3.5 assists per game and 2.4 steals per game. Jaylen Curry ranks second on the squad with 16.0 points per game on 48.1 percent shooting while leading the team at 5.9 rebounds per contest. Camden Andrews (12.4) and Derek Moore (11.6) are the only other Falcons to average double-digit scoring numbers.

CBU heads into the weekend with a 4-5 overall record and an 0-3 mark in conference play after opening the season with a 68-66 win over Tuskegee on Nov. 8. The Buccaneers went on to add a win over Lane on Nov. 9 before falling to Northeastern State, 78-75, on Nov. 23. Following a pair of wins over Harding and Henderson State at the end of November, CBU opened conference play with a loss to Mississippi College before falling to Delta State on Dec. 7. On Dec. 13, the Bucs fell to Union, 74-70, before dropping a second meeting with Northeastern State, 76072, on Dec. 15.
 
Through nine games, CBU averages 73.1 points per game on a 47.2-percent shooting clip and a 38.5-percent mark from long range. The Bucs average 39.3 rebounds per game while allowing just 28.8 for a 10.6 rebounding margin while dishing out an average of 16.1 assists per game. Defensively, CBU allows its opponents to score 73.7 points per game on a 43.8-percent shooting mark and a 37.1-percent clip from deep while forcing 10.9 turnovers per game.
 
Individually, CBU is led by Jailen Anderson with 13.3 points on 39.5 percent shooting and 64.6 percent from the free-throw line. Iman Kheirati leads the team on the glass with an average of 10.8 rebounds while scoring 12.1 points per game as the only GSC player to average a double-double through the first half of the season. Kyler Mann is the last Buccaneer to score double digits with an average of 11.0 points per game on 55.9 percent shooting and 66.7 percent from deep.
 
Series History Against CBU:
Since 1997, Montevallo holds an 11-9 record against the Buccaneers with the Falcons having a 6-3 record at home against CBU. Since the Falcons rejoined the GSC, Montevallo is 6-5 against the Bucs with CBU taking the last meeting, 81-65, on Feb. 15, 2024.

Union holds a 7-2 overall record and a 3-0 mark in conference play through the first half of the season. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 73-61 win over Lane on the road before topping Tuskegee, 78-69, on Nov. 9. Union went on to add wins over Williams Baptist and Bethel before dropping a matchup with Drury on Nov. 26. In the Bulldogs final game of the nonconference schedule, Union lost to Illinois Springfield, 76-65, on Nov. 27. To start GSC action, Union topped Delta State, 83-68, before defeating Mississippi College, 83-73, on Dec. 7. Most recently, Union defeated Christian Brothers, 74-70, on Dec. 13.
 
As a team, the Bulldogs average 78.3 points per game on a 46.2-percent shooting clip and a 35.5-percent mark from long range while shooting 78.6 percent from the charity stripe. On the glass, Union averages 38.4 rebounds per game while allowing 34.8 rebounds from opponents for a 3.7 rebounding margin. The Bulldogs have tallied an average of 10.6 assists per game. Defensively, Union allows just 71.7 points per game on a 42.2-percent shooting mark while forcing 12.4 turnovers per game for an average of 13.2 points off turnovers.
 
Individually, CJ Jackson leads Union with an average of 17.0 points per game on 48.1 percent shooting and 45.5 percent from three. Kaleim Taylor ranks second on the squad with 12.0 points per game on a 50.6-percent shooting clip and 40.0 percent from long range. Parker Applegate leads the Bulldogs on the glass with an average of 8.6 rebounds per game and 11.7 points per game as the only other Bulldog to score double-digit points.
 
Series History Against Union:
In the short-lived series, Union holds an 8-1 record over the Falcons with eight-straight wins since the 2018-19 season. Most recently, Union took down Montevallo, 81-66, on Feb. 17, 2024.
