Women’s Basketball Set to Host Christian Brothers and No. 17 Union

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team returns home to close out the 2024 slate, hosting Christian Brothers (Dec. 19) and No. 17 Union (Dec. 21) at Central State Bank Arena.

So Far This Season…
Montevallo holds an overall record of 4-5 with a 2-2 mark in GSC play. The Falcons opened the season in Montgomery, Ala., falling to No. 16 Nova Southeastern and Embry-Riddle in the GSC/SSC Challenge. The Falcons split the next two road contests, defeating Shorter 52-51 and falling to Spring Hill 78-69. UM closed non-conference play with a dominant 94-67 win over UT Southern at home.

The Falcons opened conference play with home wins over No. 15 Lee (67-59) and Trevecca Nazarene (57-40). Last time out, Montevallo dropped a pair of road contests to Delta State (61-59) and Mississippi College (58-48). The Falcons had two players average double figure scoring last weekend in Anna Katherine Eastman (15.5 ppg) and Aubrey Sorrells (13.5 ppg). Sorrells efforts led her to garner GSC Freshman of the Week honors for the second consecutive week.

Montevallo is averaging 61.9 points per game, while shooting 40.9 percent from the floor, including a 29.8 percent clip from long range. Opponents are averaging 63.2 points, while shooting 42.5 percent from the floor, with a 35.2 percent clip from distance. The Falcons are averaging 33.3 rebounds, 10.8 assists, and 7.3 steals.

On the season, Isabel Grimes leads the team in scoring (10.4 ppg) and steals (19), while Jordan Gillies leads in rebounding (5.0 rpg), assists (39), and blocks (eight).

Christian Brothers holds an overall record of 0-8 with a 0-3 mark in GSC play. The Lady Bucs opened the season with home losses to Lynn, Barry, and Southern Arkansas. CBU closed non-conference play with a pair of losses, both coming to Ouachita Baptist. The Lady Bucs opened GSC play with a pair of close defeats at home, falling to Mississippi College (62-53) and Delta State (57-51). Last time out, CBU fell to No. 20 Union 99-52 on Friday.

Christian Brothers averages 51.3 points per game, compared to opponents 72.5 points. CBU shoots 33.6 percent from the field, with a 28.1 percent clip from long range. The Lady Bucs average 27.9 rebounds, 10.0 assists, and 6.3 steals.

Individually, Jada Hood leads CBU in scoring (12.6 ppg), assists (21), and steals (nine), while Nyapar Mathot leads the team in rebounding (4.3 rpg).

Series History Against Christian Brothers…
Since 1997, these two teams have faced off 19 times with Montevallo holding a 13-5 advantage. The Falcons went 2-0 against CBU last year, taking a 59-43 win at home and a 72-54 victory on the road.

SCOUTING UNION: WATCH | LIVE STATS
Union holds an overall record of 8-2 and a 3-0 mark in GSC play. The Lady Bulldogs opened the season with a 2-1 stint at the D2CCA Tipoff Classic, defeating Minot State and Texas A&M International, before falling to No. 3 Grand Valley State. Union responded with wins over Williams Baptist and Illinois Springfield, before falling to No. 5 Ashland. The Lady Bulldogs opened GSC action with an 85-59 win over Delta State and a 77-66 win over Mississippi College. Union followed that up with a non-conference win over Kentucky State. Last time out, the Bulldogs defeated Christian Brothers 99-52.

Offensively, the Lady Bulldogs have been stellar, ranking as the third-best scoring offense in the nation. Nationwide, Union ranks first in bench points per game (48.8) and three-pointers per game (12.9). Te high-scoring Union squad has reached the century mark in four contests this season. The Lady Bulldogs have caused havoc on the defensive end, ranking fifth in the nation in turnovers forced per game (28.7).

Bethany Dillard leads Union in scoring, averaging 13 points a contest. Dillard ranks first in the nation in three-pointers per game (3.7). Jazalyn Anousinh leads the team in assists with 37, while ranking first in the conference and fifth nationally in assist/turnover ratio (2.85). Kynidi Mason Striverson leads the team in rebounding (4.0 rpg).

Series History against Union…
Since 1982, these two squads have faced off 19 times with Union holding a 17-2 advantage. Union went 2-0 against Montevallo last year, which included a narrow 79-73 win inside of Central State Bank Arena.
