Falcons Host Lee and Trevecca Nazarene to Open GSC Play

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball tips off conference play on Thursday night when the Falcons take on Lee at 7:30 p.m. before facing Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday afternoon.
 
Thursday's contest features Shelby Emergency Assistance's Project Christmas Toy Drive. Every fan that donates a toy to help children in need will receive free admission to the Falcons' first Gulf South Conference game of the season.
 
So Far This Season…
The Falcons head into the start of the Gulf South Conference slate with a 4-2 overall record after topping Barry, 93-81, to open the season before falling to No. 2 Nova Southeastern on Nov. 9 in the final game of the GSC-SSC Crossover Classic. Montevallo moved on to take a 99-92 win over Spring Hill on the road on Nov. 15. The Falcons kicked off a five-game homestand with an 83-69 win over Point before adding an 86-42 win over Carolina Christian on Nov. 20. Most recently, the Falcons dropped a meeting with Cumberland, 81-63, on Sunday, Nov. 24.
 
In the Falcons' first six games of the season, Montevallo is averaging 85.2 points per game on a 45.9-percent clip from the field with a 35.5-percent mark from long range. The Falcons are also strong at the free-throw line shooting 74.6 percent from the charity stripe. On the glass, Montevallo averages 37.3 rebounds per game with 13.5 offensive boards per contest while dishing out 14.5 assists per game. Defensively, the Falcons allow 78.2 points per game on a 48.1-percent shooting clip from opponents with a 38.2-percent mark from three-point range. The Falcons' opponents average 33.7 rebound per game while recording 14.7 assists per contest.
 
Individually, Jaylen Curry leads the Falcons with 16.7 points per game won a 48.4-percent mark from the floor to go along with 4.3 rebounds per game, five total steals and five blocks in the first six games. Sophomore Brandon Fussell ranks second on the squad with 16.2 points per game on an impressive 50-percent shooting clip with 3.5 boards and 4.0 assists per game while Camden Andrews averages 14.0 points on a team-high 58.6-percent shooting with a 69.2-percent mark from long range.

Lee enters Thursday's contest with a 4-0 record during non-conference action with an 89-69 win over Tennessee Southern to open the season. The Flames added an 84-68 win over Lindsey Wilson College on Nov. 13 before topping Lane, 94-55, on Nov. 18. Most recently, Lee came away with a 74-72 win over Claflin on the road on Nov. 26.
 
After the non-conference slate, Lee is averaging 85.3 points per game on a 51-percent shooting mark with a 42.3-percent clip from long range while adding an 80.6-percent mark from the charity stripe. On the glass, Lee is pulling down 38.3 rebounds per game while allowing opponents 27.3 rebounds for an 11.0 rebounding margin. The Flames average 18.0 assists per game while recording an average of 8.0 steals per contest. Defensively, the Flames allow just 66.0 points per game on an opponent shooting percentage of 44.6 percent. The Flames allow just 6.3 three-pointers per game on a 30.1-percent shooting mark from Lee's opponents.
 
Individually, Lee is led by Willie Walton who is averaging 15.7 points per game on 57.1 percent from the field while also leading the team in rebounds with 6.0 boards per game. Giancarlo Valdez ranks second on the squad with 13.8 points per game on an impressive 61.8-percent shooting while Noah Boler-Kyle (12.5) and Marlon Smith (11.3) also average double-digit points.
 
Series History Against Lee:
The Falcons have historically struggled against the Flames with a 1-13 all-time record against Lee on the hardwood. With the series beginning on Jan. 31, 1995, Lee has won the last 11 meetings between the two sides with Montevallo's lone series win coming on Jan. 16, 2018, with a 68-67 win in Montevallo, Ala. Most recently, the Falcons dropped both matchups against Lee a season ago with the final loss coming on Jan. 27, 2024.

Trevecca heads into its first conference game against the Falcons with a 5-2 overall record and an 0-1 GSC mark after opening the season with a 77-64 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic on Nov. 8 before topping Embry-Riddle, 91-85, for the Trojans' first win as a GSC member. The Trojans added a 112-66 win over Welch College on Nov. 11 before defeating Shorter, 84-72, on Nov. 16. TNU moved on to a 105-58 win over Kentucky Christian before topping Cumberland, 95-56, on Nov. 23. Most recently, the Trojans fell to Alabama Huntsville, 88-83, on Nov. 27.
 
Trevecca boasts one of the top offenses in the GSC with an average of 90.6 points per game on a 49.3-percent clip from the field with the Trojans shooting 37.4 percent from long range with an average of 11.7 threes per game. On the glass, Trevecca averages 38.6 rebounds per game with its opponents averaging just 33.4 rebounds. The Trojans share the ball with 19.6 assists per game while recording 6.7 steals and 3.3 blocks per contest. Defensively, the Trojans allow just 71.7 points per game on a 42.9-percent shooting mark from opponents with a 29.9-percent clip from three.
 
The Trojans are led by Jikari Johnson who averages 20.0 points per game on a 52.3-percent shooting mark with a 45.5-percent clip from deep while pulling down 3.7 rebounds per game in 27.4 minutes. Jalen Page ranks second on the squad with 19.3 points per game while averaging 4.3 rebounds per game with 15 total assists and six steals. NaVuan Peterson leads the team on the glass with 6.4 rebounds per game while scoring 10.9 points per game on a 47.4-percent mark from the floor.
 
Series History Against Trevecca:
Saturday's matchup will be the first meeting between Montevallo and Trevecca Nazarene since the Falcons became an NCAA member back in 1996-97.
