Montevallo Moves to 2-0 in GSC Play With Win Over Trevecca

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – For the first time since December 2021, Montevallo Men's Basketball starts the Gulf South Conference schedule 2-0 win an 89-71 win over GSC newcomer Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday evening.
 
Montevallo opened the game on a 6-0 run in the first three minutes before back-to-back Trevecca threes tied the game at 6-6 heading into the first media timeout. The Falcons fell behind heading into the second media timeout with a 7-2 Trojan run that led to a 13-8 TNU lead at the 12:31 mark. The Falcons clawed back with free throws from Camden Andrews and Derek Moore before Brandon Fussell tied the game at 13-13 with his second bucket of the night. With 7:27 left in the first half, the Falcons came up with three-consecutive offensive rebounds before Curry nailed a three from the wing to pull the Falcons back within one at 21-20. Curry added a second triple just two minutes later to give the Falcons a 25-24 lead before Andrews answered a TNU bucket with another Montevallo three to give the Falcons a 28-27 lead heading into the final media timeout of the first half. Andrews lifted Montevallo to a five-point advantage at the 2:51 mark. An 8-0 run from Trevecca to close the half left the Falcons trailing 38-35 heading into the locker room.
 
Montevallo come out of the half firing with a 7-0 run from the Falcons' top scorers Andrews, Fussell and Curry put the Falcons back on top just three minutes into the second. Fussell's second three of the game snapped a 42-42 tie at the 16:22 mark. Montevallo expanded its lead with a 6-0 run after the under 16 media timeout to take a 51-44 lead with 13:40 to play. The Trojans battled back to within one of Montevallo with 8:06 on the clock to trail 59-58 after a 7-2 run. Curry ended the TNU run with a strong finish at the rim before nailing a three from way downtown to beat the shot-clock buzzer at the 7:40 mark. Curry scored his eighth-straight point with yet another shot from long range to give Montevallo a 67-61 lead with 6:39 on the clock. An Andrews triple just a minute later marked the fifth three of the half for Montevallo as the Falcons led 70-64. The Falcons stretched the lead back out to nine with four-consecutive points from Tyson Sexton heading into the final 3:38. The Falcons shot 10-for-10 from the charity stripe while holding TNU scoreless in the final 3:38 to take an 89-71 win over Trevecca Nazarene.

  • Montevallo won the battle on the glass, 41-33, with the Falcons ripping down 13 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second-chance points.
  • The Falcons took care of the ball with a season-low four turnovers while forcing 13 from the Trojans that led to 36 Montevallo points.
  • Montevallo shot the ball well with a 44.3 percent shooting clip while going 83.9 percent from the free-throw line with a 26-for-31 mark.
  • Brandon Fussell came a bucket shy of 30 points for the second-straight game but finished the game with 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting to lead all scorers.
  • Jaylen Curry also eclipsed 20 points with 21 points on an impressive 7-of-13 shooting to go along with four threes and eight rebounds.
  • Tyson Sexton led the Falcons on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds while adding eight points.
