MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After being tied at 40 at the 9:30 mark in the fourth quarter, the Montevallo women's basketball team ended the game on a 17-0 run to take down Trevecca Nazarene 57-40 on Saturday.
Aubrey Sorrells led the way, notching her first double-double of the season with 14 points and ten rebounds.
Isabel Grimes added 13 points and
Jordan Gillies scored ten points. Gillies and Grimes both recorded four steals each, while Sorrells had three steals.
Montevallo struck first as
Elisa Saffold drained a three-point basket to open the game. The Falcons looked to find rhythm early on, as Trevecca took a 5-3 lead at the first media timeout (4:56). The Falcons connected on a pair of free throws through the next three minutes, before
Isabel Grimes cashed in on the next field goal of the game, giving Montevallo a 9-7 advantage with 1:54 left on the clock. Both teams scored one more basket in the final two minutes, as a
Jordan Gillies lay-in put the Falcons ahead 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams scored baskets in the first minute of the second quarter with the first Falcon bucket coming from
Aubrey Sorrells. After the Trojans took a brief one-point lead, a Gillies lay-in put the Falcons back in front 15-14, at the 6:36, mark. The Falcons went to work in the paint as three layups from Sorrells and Grimes, highlighted a Montevallo 10-2 run, putting the Falcons ahead 25-17 with 2:48 left on the clock. The Trojans scored the final five points of the quarter as UM held a 25-22 lead at the break.
Both teams traded baskets in the opening half of the third quarter, as a Gillies and-one put the Falcons up by four, 32-28, at the 5:40 mark. The Trojans responded with a pair of baskets to tie the game at 32 at the 4:46 mark. Both teams cashed in on a pair of baskets to keep the game tied at 36, before lay-ins by Grimes and Sorrells put the Falcons ahead 40-36 with 1:03 left on the clock. The Trojans scored in the final minute, as Montevallo held a 40-38 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Trojans opened the fourth quarter with a bucket at the 9:30 mark to tie the game at 40, but the Montevallo defense did not allow another basket, ending the game on a 17-0 run. Baskets by Sorrells, Grimes and Cook would put the Falcons up 48-40 at the 6:57 mark, forcing a Trevecca timeout. Free throws by Cook and Saffold gave Montevallo its first double digit advantage of the contest, 51-40, at the 3:33 mark. Saffold cashed in on a lay-in at the 1:20 left and four free throws for UM sealed the deal, as Montevallo took home the 57-40 victory to finish the opening weekend of conference play 2-0.
