Falcons Drop Road Game at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – Montevallo women's basketball dropped a road contest to No. 7 Union, 73-50, on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Montevallo jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with four quick points from Leisha Steger in the opening two minutes. Moments later, Union went on a quick 6-0 run to take a two-point lead before freshman Ramie Reid finished through contact to tie the game at 11-11 with 5:45 to play. Veteran Marisa Snodgrass broke a 13-13 tie with a put-back at the 2:48 mark to spark an 8-0 Montevallo run to end the quarter. Isabel Grimes scored five points in the last two minutes of the first to give Montevallo a 21-13 lead heading to the second. 
 
Union cut the Falcons' lead down to two in the opening 1:35 with a pair of corner threes before Cali Smallwood answered with her first three of the game. Another Montevallo offensive rebound led to a second Smallwood triple to stretch Montevallo's lead to 27-19 with 6:39 in the half. The freshman scored her ninth straight point for the Falcons with another three to end a quick 4-0 run from UU. With seconds left on the shot clock, Marisa Snodgrass beat the buzzer with a tough finish in the paint to give Montevallo its largest lead of the day at 33-23. Union closed the gap with an 8-0 run to end the first half to head into the half with Montevallo leading 33-31. 
 
Following Anna Katherine Eastman's first triple of the afternoon, Union knocked down two threes in consecutive possessions to take its first lead since midway through the first quarter. Union stretched a three-point lead out to seven before Snodgrass ended the run with a three at the 4:33 mark. The Falcons managed to cut Union's lead down to three with under two minutes to play but, a 7-0 Union run to end the third left Montevallo trailing 53-43 heading to the fourth. 
 
Snodgrass cut the lead down to single digits with a three early in the fourth but Union would answer with a 10-2 run to go up 65-50 at the fourth quarter media timeout. The Falcons couldn't find any offense in the final 5:40 to fall to Union 73-50.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
1st | Montevallo cleaned up the glass with a 19-7 lead in rebounding in the first quarter with the Falcons grabbing 11 offensive rebounds in the first. Grimes led the Falcons with seven early points. 
2nd | The Falcons stretched the lead out to as many as ten points before Union cut it down to just two with an 8-0 run to end the first half. With a trio of triples, Smallwood led the Falcons with nine points in the second. 
3rd | Montevallo was outscored 22-10 in the third quarter with Union taking its first lead since midway through the first. The Falcons shot just 20 percent from the floor with only two baskets. 
4th |Montevallo shot 16.7 percent in the fourth while Union went 8-fo-12 from the floor to outscore the Falcons 20-7 in the final ten minutes. 
 
GAME NOTES 
  • Montevallo won the rebounding battle, 40-38, with the Falcons taking a 19-10 advantage on the offensive glass. 
  • Union controlled the paint with a 26-16 advantage in scoring inside. 
  • Marisa Snodgrass led Montevallo with 15 points while grabbing four rebounds and adding four assists.
  • Smallwood nearly reached a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
