MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Freshman guard
Brandon Fussell tied a school record with 50 points in a 91-83 win over West Florida, Saturday, in Central State Bank Arena.
In a must-win game, Fussell, a native of Guntersville, Alabama took over when he needed to and finished with a stellar 50 points on 16-of-23 shooting from the floor (69 percent), 6-of-9 from three (66 percent) and a perfect 12-for-12 mark from the charity stripe.
West Florida outscored Montevallo 37-30 in the first half behind nine three-pointers, however, UM poured in 61 second-half points, including 39 from Fussell, to race past the Argonauts on the back of Fussell.
With 12:10 remaining in the game,
Aidan Gardiner put the Falcons ahead by eight, 55-47. Over the next 10:41 Fussell scored 25 consecutive points for UM to stay ahead of UWF 79-75. With three seconds to go Fussell made two free throws to reach 50 points and tie the school record set by
Braxton Bertolette in 2023, icing the 91-83 win.
Fussell scored 39 of his 50 total points in the second half and went 12-of-15 from the floor, including 25 straight points for UM.
Out of halftime, Montevallo used a 15-0 run, that included nine points from Fussell, to jump ahead of the Argos 45-37 at the 16:13 mark.
West Florida cut the lead to as little as one with 7:40 to go, 62-61, but a three-pointer and layup from Fussell quickly pushed the Falcons back ahead by six, 67-61.
With under three minutes to play, West Florida once again made it a one-point game but five more points from Fussell and a three-pointer from
Jack Henderson put UM up by seven, 82-75, with 1:29 to go.
Montevallo sealed the win from the free-throw line and went 17-of-18 on the night from the charity stripe.
During his 25-point stretch from 12:10 to 1:29, Fussell went 8-of-10 from the floor and scored 12 points without missing a shot in three minutes from 8:56 to 5:56.

- Freshman Brandon Fussell scored a career-high 50 points and tied a school record set by Braxton Bertolette in 2023 against AUM.
- Fussell went 16-of-23 from the floor and turned in the third-best free-throw shooting mark in UM program history as he finished 12-of-12. He also went 6-of-9 from three.
- Fussell added three assists, two rebounds and two steals.
- Tyson Sexton and Jack Henderson joined Fussell in double-figures with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
- Fussell is the first Freshman over 40 points in a game for Montevallo.
- Aidan Gardiner dished out a career-high four assists.
- Jack Henderson logged a team-high nine rebounds.
Montevallo will return to Central State Bank Arena for its final game of the year against AUM on Mar. 2, at 4 p.m.
