Falcons Headed To Shorter For Thursday Matchup

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's basketball looks to break a four-game losing skid on Thursday night when the Falcons head to Shorter for a 4:30 p.m. tipoff on the road.
 
So Far This Season…
Montevallo heads to Rome, Ga. with an 11-10 overall record and a 9-9 mark in Gulf South Conference play fresh off a 75-72 loss to Mississippi College on Saturday, Feb. 3. The season began with a 1-1 record with a win over Nova Southeastern and a loss to Embry-Riddle in early November. The Falcons home opener featured a 67-40 win over Birmingham-Southern College before Montevallo kicked off conference play with a pair of road wins over Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama. Montevallo added a 66-57 win over Shorter before falling to Lee for the first GSC loss of the season. The Falcons notched a pair of road wins at Mississippi College and Delta State before returning home for a loss to West Georgia on Dec. 15. Montevallo fell to No. 8 Union on New Year's Eve before returning from break for a 16-point win over Christian Brothers on Jan. 2. In a three-game road trip, the Falcons took a 70-67 win over West Florida before falling to Valdosta State and Auburn Montgomery in back-to-back outings. Montevallo snapped a three-game skid with a win over West Alabama on Jan. 17 before taking down West Georgia on a last second shot on Jan. 20. Montevallo then went on a four-game skid with losses to UAH, Lee, Delta State with the most recent loss to Mississippi College on Feb. 3.
 
Montevallo averages 65.9 points per game while allowing 65.7 points per game from opponents with the Falcons shooting 36.9 percent from the field. Montevallo defense allows its opponents to shoot 41.4 percent from the floor while forcing the fourth-most steals per game at 8.38 per contest.
 
The Falcons maintain the highest free-throw shooting clip at 76.8 percent from the charity stripe with a sixth-ranked 32 percent clip from beyond the arc. The Falcons have struggled on the glass with a -4.9-rebounding margin.

The Hawks head into Thursday nights matchup wit ha 2-19 overall record and a 1-16 mark in GSC play. The season opened with a pair of losses in the GSC/SSC Crossover Classic. Shorter grabbed its first win of the season with a 68-65 win over Oakwood. Following a loss to Georgia College, Shorter began GSC play with a pair of home losses to West Florida and Valdosta State before heading to Montevallo for a loss to the Falcons. Shorter dropped a matchup with AUM before hosting West Alabama and UAH for a pair of losses at home. The Hawks went on a three-game road skid at Lee, Mississippi College and Delta State. Shorter dropped three games at home to West Georgia, Union and Christian Brothers before dropping back-to-back games to Valdosta State and West Florida on the road. The Hawks fell to AUM on the road before dropping a matchup with UAH. In the most recent matchup, Shorter defeated West Alabama, 59-56, on the road.
 
Shorter has the second-lowest scoring offense in the GSC with an average of 54.1 points per game while giving up 74 points per game. The Hawks shoot 36.3 percent from the field while allowing its opponents to shoot 46.2 percent from the field.
 
Series History A gainst Shorter:
The Falcons have had historic success against Shorter with an all-time record of 21-3 against the Hawks since the series began in 1988. The all-time series began with nine-consecutive Falcon victories from 1988 to 2007. Shorter found its first win over Montevallo during the 2008 season with the Lady Hawks going 3-1 in the following four meetings with Shorter's most recent win coming on Jan. 9, 2018 by a score of 95-60. Since the loss in 2018, Montevallo has rattled off nine-consecutive victories with the most recent coming on Dec. 1 with the Falcons taking a 66-57 win at home.

The Falcons' scoring is led by Cali Smallwood who averages 12.0 points per game with Marisa Snodgrass (10.5) and Isabel Grimes (10.0) following closely behind. Smallwood also leads the Falcons with a 6.4 rebound per game average while Grimes is second on the squad with 4.3 per game. Snodgrass is still one of the top assisters in the league with an average of 4.7 per game (second) while adding 2.5 steals per game (third).
